Isinglass, quite a super performance on your part. A lot of time and trouble went into all that. But very helpful and thank you for sharing your info. A lot of the older colours I do not have. Great job!!!!!
May 9, 2011 at 05:59 #354559A sidelight to the Oaks colours, I noticed 1939 Oaks winner SUPERBE owned by the Duchess of Marlborough. I have a jpeg of her husband the Duke of Marlborough’s silks and they were Nigger Brown, Crimson striped Sleeves, Crimson Cap. Obviously that type of colour brown would be unacceptable in today’s world.
May 9, 2011 at 18:26 #354687I’ll confess ……….. her’s were also described in the same way but I chickened out.
Somewhere in the Irish one’s I’ll post later , there’s a colour described as "shot" brown.
now without lowering the tone ( too late came the cry ) , I presume it’s a specific shade – and not a typo on someone’s behalf !
Keep smiling & searching.

May 11, 2011 at 19:26 #354987Here’s a reason to oppose closing libraries. Earlier today I was reading a history of York & Doncaster racecourses in the local library – by J Fairfax Blakeborough.
Great section detailing all Legers run up to late 1940’s and it also lists the colours for some of them – that’s where I got the brown striped sleeves for Jeddah ; we were discussing black or brown a while ago.
Anyway …… remember a little while ago we were discussing Caligula 1920 Leger winner owned by Mathras Goculdas. Said his colours were cherry & black hoops but British Pathe website showed the jockey in a solid colour with striped sleeves.
Just before the Leger , Caligula was sold by Lord Wilton to Clarence Hailey who bought him on behalf of Goculdas ( who couldn’t leave India to watch his horses in England due to restrictions of his caste ).
In Ruffs Guide 1921 – Mr C Hailey Orange Black & White striped slvs Orange cap.
What do you reckon ? Even in black & white it looks good !!
Cheers

So Isinglass, its brown not blac stipes? Brilliant research as ever.
The Goucaldas find is remarkable. Between us all on here there must be a book!

Oh, and by the way shame on the people currently working at Doncaster racecourse as I asked them precisely the same question recently but to no avail.
May 12, 2011 at 04:50 #355037I’ll be quite honest with you, a book is not a crazy idea as it seems. I would say without any reservation no one has done a book (bar Ruffs of course) that would have the major topic as race colours. Every race club in the English speaking world would have one in their offices ……………….then the plan is world domination, heh, heh!!
May 13, 2011 at 16:30 #355276I have exhausted all my available resources and still cannot find the 1867/8 Leger winners Achievement and Formosa. I dont suppose anyone has these do they?
May 13, 2011 at 19:46 #355306This is what I’ve got :-
1868 Formosa William Graham green black sash
1867 Achievement Mark Pearson black scarlet chevronsTaken from the appendix section of Raciana that lists winners & colours of the classics up to 1889.
Also , can verify Graham as he owned Gamos , Oaks 1870 , and I’ve seen an illustration that backs it up.

May 13, 2011 at 21:48 #355326I have to hang my head in shame Isinglass. I have known of Raciana since you guys posted it up on this thread, but never ventured into the appendix, settling for a word search in adobe acrobat. For some reason the word searches dont seem to venture into the appendix.
Apologies for wasting everyone’s time

May 15, 2011 at 14:58 #355552Hello Isinglass
1991 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Fourstars Allstar was a US horse trained in America by an Irishman (I think his name was Leo O’Brien).
Colours were LIGHT BLUE, BROWN STAR, TWO BROWN CHEVRONS ON SLEEVES, LIGHT BLUE CAP.
CheersMay 15, 2011 at 15:05 #3555541985 TRIPTYCH owned by Alan Clore was LIGHT BLUE, LIGHT BLUE AND MAUVE HALVED SLEEVES. (From 1985 English 1000 Guineas race card).
May 16, 2011 at 15:10 #355700I notice the Bunker Hunt colours corpping up a few times in the Irish lists.
His colours in the USA are the same jacket but a different cap. I seem to have conflicting information about the actual colour of his racing colours’ cap io the US – it is either light green or dark green but I am yet to have definitive evidence which one is which, though – the 1978 JCGC footage attached seems to suggest it is dark green, though the racecards of the time conflict with this – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZFr6N2l … AE2DC87AFE.
Can anyone help please.
May 17, 2011 at 00:21 #355761Hi again
A couple of colours I need clarification on.
Pharly, runner up to Blushing Groom in the 1977 Poulains before winning the Moulin in the same year. Owned by A Blasco.
Also, the 1984 Moulin winner was owned by "P S Niarchos" who I presume is a son of Stavros Niarchos. I have a racecard which shows Dactylographer to be owned by P S Niarchos but this shows the colors as identical to Stavros’ ones. However an admittedly small photo of him winning in the 1984 Timeform Racehorses Annual seems to suggest a dark cap is involed.
Many thanks in advance
May 17, 2011 at 00:55 #355763Mr Antonio Blasco, owner of Pharly, colours are LIGHT BLUE, YELLOW CROSS BELTS, YELLOW CAP
Mr Phillip S. Niarchos, owner of Dactylographer, colours are DARK BLUE, LIGHT BLUE CROSS BELTS, STRIPED SLEEVES, RED CAP.
I’ve seen Bunker Hunt’s US colours with a dark green cap and a light green cap. I strongly suggest you toss a coin because as i said in a posting months back, the US racing authorities are not as strict on cap colours as other countries.
Cheers
May 17, 2011 at 13:56 #355813I’m compiling english 1000 guineas past winners. Can anyone help me with these, please.
