Classic Winners – Owners Colours

Hi All , can tick one off the missing list for the Ascot Gold Cup. Was originally looking for Anticipation , owned by a “Mr Lechmere”. After a bit of searching found out the following :-

1816 Anticipation won the Gold Cup when still owned by his breeder , Thomas Thornhill ( white , red slvs ) .

In 1817 he was sold to a Mr A.Goddard and won the 1819 Gold Cup for him carrying – white mazarine blue seams, slvs & cap

A couple of races after that he broke down and was sold to Edmund Lechmere Charlton for stud duties.

That leaves only :- 1943 Ujiji Major AE Allnatt and 1907/1908 The White Knight Col. TYL Kirkwood ( also owned 1881 National winner Woodbrook )

Slewman , you’re right about the Irish ones being difficult – seems to be a lack of readily obtained information regarding owners so it’s an internet marathon at the moment although have had some success – also given myself a similar headache with the French Classics but have had more success finding owners there – this is your fault for those initial postings you made on this thread – as I say , keeps me off the streets !

Happy to share what I’ve found if you folks are interested – will be a fair bit of additional typing so it may take a little while – let me know . The following are the more recent gaps in my Irish search – any ideas ?

Apologies, with Dara Monarch I tried to memorize them but slightly incorrect. An old race card officially shows Dara Monarch, owned by Mrs Liam Browne as DARK BLUE, EMERALD GREEN HOOP, ARMLETS and CAP. Cheers

The Irish Classic colours would be a great addition Isinglass, thanks in advance.

I seem to have solved the Eugene Constant conundrum. I acquired the "Courses de France" book from ebay recently, which includes the main colours in France in 1950. They have the Constant colours exactly as Slewman suggested – white, black hoop and armlets, and, significantly, a white cap. So France Galop’s information seems to have been inaccurate, as they had their red cap version listed as from 1950 also.

At least the mystery is solved.

Sadly Ortello’s (1929 Arc) colours remain elusive!

I knew I wasn’t going mad! During C4’s excellent montage of Henry Cecil’s classic winners this afternoon, they showed the finish of thee 1989 Oaks which Snow Bride won on a technicality. Although the Racing Post result lists the Cecil filly as being owned by Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum (of Lammtarra fame), she apeears, as I suspected but couldn’t prove in the absence of a racecard, to have carried the colours Mohammed Obaida.

I am presuming that Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum must have bought her after the race, or does Obaida have some sort of connection to the Maktoum’s?

If memory serves me correctly, and this is only through memory, I remember Snow Bride racing in Royal Blue, Maroon Chevron and Check Cap. Mohammed Oabida silks are Royal Blue, Red Epaulets, Striped Cap. Don’t ask me why Snow Bride raced in those colours. She did run in the ownership of Sheikh Mohammed. When Sheikh Mohammed started racing horses in the UK in 1980, his original silks were Royal Blue, White Chevron, Royal Blue Cap, White Star as I have a racecard of Known Fact winning 2000 guineas on protest from Nuryev with the Sheikh having a runner (Taufan). Not long after that he changed to his Maroon and white.

Snow Bride definitely ran in the blue & maroon as Slewman describes – have the race card for that years Oaks.

When I win the lottery and buy a horse , think I’ll keep it all the time so as not to confuse folks like us in 50 years time !

Thanks guys – so the Snow Bride colours are presumably a version registered to Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum prior to the green and white ones made famours by Lammtarra.

I must admit I didn’t know about Sheikh Mo’s early silks, though coincidentally I acquired the 1980 Timeform racehorses annual on ebay this week and noticed he was a Shiekh Mo, but didnt realise he carried completely different silks in the 1980 season.

Looking at the footage here you can actually see Taufan (I must admit I thought the colours were Hamdan’s but without close up shots it is impossible to tell).

On a slight tangent, does anyone know why the 1980 Timeform Racehorses annual only included Races from abroad in the detailed results section? Was there a separate publication at that time covering the domestic detailed race results?

As promised, here’s what I’ve found for the Irish Derby. On Page 13 of the thread Slewman gave us a great head start – what follows includes any that were missing within the period submitted.
A few caveats – apologies for poor spelling or if it looks “odd” when copied from word document to Forum and if I’ve mis-interpreted “shades” of colour in making this posting. If anything stands out as complete rubbish , I’d welcome any corrections.
