Classic Winners – Owners Colours

Speaking of second colours, does anyone know how many owners changed their colours,

I know Mrs J magnier changed from yellow black star, to all dark blue, (and then has second colours all pink)

And then when Duchess of westmisters husband died she put a black band on her colours

but after that I’d be curious

Michael Buckley (owner of Spirit River and Finian’s Rainbow among others) changed to the current white/black cap from Black & White Quarters/slvs reversed and check cap. Not quite sure the date of the change. Michael Watt changed to beige/green cap from blue/white check, blue sleeves green cap I believe (I am presuming Michael H Watt and Michael Watt are the same person?)

One set that has slightly changed down the years were Prince A A Faisals. Orig maroon, white epaulets, white cap maroon star (days of Rafha). At some stage the epaulets became grey, the cap maroon with a silver star and now the cap is simply maroon. Not sure of the reasons for this – the watt and buckley ones were presumably bought at a cherished silks auction.

I think I have metnioned this one before, but the shade of blue in both the Wertheimer and Wildenstein silks seems to have lightened down the years.

Not quite sure of the exact time either ivanjica, but if any help he was still using old colours in 95 when he had Tinryland in The Grand National. Others form this era included Mutare and Thumbs Up if I remember correctly.

Thanks VTC. Looked at some old Chasers & Hurdlers and Classy Lad appears in the 1996/7 one in the old Buckley colours. Demasta appears in 2000/1 with the new ones so I guess that narrows it down to a 3 year window.

Mutare tragically died in action as did The Proclamation who was mentioned with some affection in a recent RUK post race interview at Newbury with Mr Buckley – he spoke of him as the most talented young jumper Henderson ever trained, which is no small compliment. I wonder if the change of colours was designed to bring a change of luck because down the years he has lost some beautiful horses – many years proir to the two mentioned his Hennessey winner Zete’s Son died at Valentine’s in red Rum’s famous 3rd Grand National.

His other good chaser of that period was Strombolus who won the 1977 Whitbread as a novice. I must admit I didn’t realise he also had a share in that great hurdler Grand Canyon who carried the fetching colours of D W Samuel and won a Colonial Cup with Lanzarote toiling in his wake!

Yeah, he had some good horses. Sadly, you can see Zetas Son in the distance, being held after his fall in the 77 national. Buckley also had Prince Rock in that race, who also ran in 1980, where he was well fancied.

I think Buckley also had a share of Brown Windsor, the 89 Whitbread winner, along with Bill Shand-Kydd.

Interesting owner Michael Buckley and great memories of some of his better horses. Couple of others:

New York Rainbow – favourite for the Supreme Novices when Flown (Henderson’s other runner!) won

Brown Windsor – pretty sure he was part owner with Bill Shand-Kydd

Mutare – who i think won the Feltham Novices one boxing day and may have won the Sun Alliance but for a horrible fall

Hi Slewman

In recent years I’ve only ever seen the second string distinguished by a red cap but when Carozza won the 1957 Oaks Lester wore a white cap with a gold fringe.

Just an observation : no actual “proof” of what the official 2nd colours are.

Hello everyone – I have come across an anomoly in my Oaks list – I had 1933 Epsom Oaks winner Chatelaine’s colours as Mauve, Red Sash, Orange/Gold Cap. HOwever I have found a cigarette card showing white red chevron red cap:

I went with "Mauve Red sash etc " based on a card in the set Ogdens Prominent Racehorses of 1933.

Think I’ve seen the other one you mention but don’t you think the Ogden series carries a bit more credence , if only from the quality of the illustration .

Not sure if it helps or hinders but,

Ernest Thornton-Smith was the owner of Chatelaine, and I believe was involved (owner?) of Fortnums. His colours as registered in Ruffs 1948 were:

LILAC, SCARLET belt (sash?), GOLD cap

Incidentally, there was (is?) a memorial dog race run at Bristol named after Mr Thornton-Smith

Shifting focuse somewhat, and back to the US scene, I have found a b&w photo of 1919 Preakness winner War Cloud – it is dark and light stipes with a light cap.

He was owned by Kingsley Macomber who also owned 1923 Arc winner Parth. Anyone know the colour scheme?

Hi Ivanjica, A Kingsley Macomber was a prominent American owner in the 1920’s but also raced horses in England. He is best known in England as the owner of Parth, winner of the 1923 Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe. His US colours were RED and WHITE STRIPES (body and sleeves), WHITE CAP. His UK colours were RED, WHITE STRIPES, RED SLEEVES, WHITE CAP. Hope this helps.

When I asked the question " does anybody out there know the colours ………. etc " must admit I wasn’t very hopeful of anyone else being too concerned with the subject.
