One thing I’m fairly confident of – Hurricane Fly will p*ss this next year.
Think I’m with you there…10-1 about Hurrciane Fly and Celestial Halo.
The problem in the race isnt that they went off too fast, but that they have overall went too slow.
March 10, 2009 at 20:59 #215014Credit to Punjabi, but surely Binocular lost this race before the start by getting far to warm, and if that didn’t put pay to his chances, he then proceeded to race with the choke out for a quarter of the race. In the cirumstances, he’s run an unbelievable race. By far the best 2 miler in training IMO. (I backed five in the race, none of them binocular!)
March 10, 2009 at 21:05 #215015I actually think the form of the race will work out, because there are so many slowly run races, and we already know that on good ground binocular and punjabi are very hard to beat, henderson has already proven this season that he can find races for the two of them throughout the season, just Nicholls has proven that he can find more testing races for Celestial Halo.
March 10, 2009 at 21:09 #215016I always thought Celestial halo was better than Binocular was making him look, so i am pleased with the run i got from him! I certainly think Binocular
should have won in hindsight, but Punjabi is a worthy winner! As far as Jereds ride! UNBELIEVEABLE! did anyone see him sprinting up the hill
when the race had finished?March 10, 2009 at 21:18 #215017Im not knocking the ride from McCoy as personally i am puzzled on how i would ride Binocular at Cheltenham in a race like that.
Would you have him up with the pace more? ? ? I am possibly thinking i would have him up with the pace even more than he was, especially when Osana started dropping backwards at the ttop of the hill.
Any thoughts guys…

I thought the first three jockeys all gave their mounts superb rides. Ruby will get stick for going too soon but don’t forget he knew he had to get Binoculaqr beat so he had to go hard from a long way out I’d have done excatly the same just unlucky that Punjabi (who Ruby must’ve thought was little threat) sprung from out of the back to do them both.
McCoy had Binocular held off the pace but not too much so he was close enough if good enough. As it turned out he wasn’t quite on the day. Had he been ridden more prominently he’d possibly have looked just as spent on the run in as the first two did.

lots of horses get warm in the pre race situation and it makes no difference.
No doubt but Binocular ran to his ability and stayed it out well enough. He hadnt enough boot last year at the end of two miles and this year perhaps aswell. Once would argue that if more use were made from him earlier, he might have won. Travels well but he doesnt accelerate as such. He is certainly no istabraq but will be a multiple winner at this level.

March 10, 2009 at 21:23 #215020I would of thought either they were going too fast for him or he thought they were going too fast to keep it up and they would come back. It looked fast to me.

Just watching the finish again and pretty much the whole field looked out on their feet. My feeling during the race was that they were going a fast pace. I think they probably went off too fast but the hold up horses couldn’t quicken in the ground. I think McCoy probably rode a perfect race but a combination of the pace and ground just blunted Binocular’s speed.
I still don’t have a time for the race but would be interested to see how it compares to the Supreme Novices

Imo, Binocular stayed alright, as he did in the Supreme, but his turn of foot that was so potent in the past was negated by the proper test this race provided. He’s always travelled supremely well previously, but the writing was on the wall when he was niggled along turning in today.
All the first 3 had very hard races (3 day whip ban for Ruby).
Solid form, imo, and possibly the best Champion Hurdle we’ve seen for a few years would be my first reaction. Punjabi had improved all last season, and again on the flat, but it really is time the authorities took a grip on horses of his experience finding double-figure improvement on prep races. If it’s not good enough for greyhound racing, why should it be tolerated for one of National Hunt’s biggest races? Truth is, it happens all the time, but the BHA don’t turn a hair unless some outsider happens to make money from it.March 10, 2009 at 21:32 #215026the times for the supremes and the champion were almost the same
March 10, 2009 at 21:33 #215028Watching the comparrisons between the Novice hurdle and the Champion how the races were run only goes to highlight how well my horse ran. If they go World Hurdle route with this horse next season I’m confident they will win it.
March 10, 2009 at 21:39 #215031The fact that the times of the Supreme Novices and Champion hurdle were almost identical tells me that they did go off too fast in the Champion and everything was tying up at the finish. I think that the conclusion must be that Barry Geraghty positioned Punjabi in the perfect place throughout – not right up with the pace but not held up too far back to reel the leaders in.
March 10, 2009 at 21:43 #215033Makes sense to me that the fast times might be dues to the high winds we have had over the last few days (Saturday/Sunday was very strong) drying out exposed bits of the course hence the different going on different bits of the course
March 10, 2009 at 21:44 #215035166 the first three for me. Binocular five pounds below his best IMO. Celestial Halo to his mark. Punjabi a career best by five pounds. Crack Away Jack the massive improver clearly loves a furious gallop at Cheltenham.
March 10, 2009 at 21:47 #215038Not a bad assessment IMO Ian- though what about the possibility that Crack Away Jack was flattered given where he raced in what looks an overly strongly-run race?
