It’s all very well for her highness to wax lyrical about all those lovely apartments at newbury racecourse but its their very existence that for me is making a visit there a poor experience these days compared to years ago And I’m not just talking about the eye watering £30 to get in!
There’s now a massive car park in the middle of the course blocking the view of part of the back streight and parking was so bad yesterday that I had to park by the 4 furlong pole and had to catch a shuttle bus to the stands passing loads of coaches on the way…where are all these going to park once the hotel at blocks of apartments are built all the way down the home streight?
As for walking in the middle in course to stand by any fence…forget it all there is now is a small sheep pen by the last fence patrolled by jobsworths.
It’s all such a shame and I doubt il will ever return after 30 years of going there,it is now the Chepstow of berkshireNovember 30, 2014 at 14:57 #496988Agree.
Swap me the concentre eyesore for trees and grass, please.
It’s the same everywhere houses and flats popping up more people living here, more cars on the road, traffic problems, I know a good idea lets knock over a few more trees and build more roads.
Excellent the government get more council tax money at the expensive of the fresh air.
And was me thinking we needed trees to help us breath, oh well the extra revenue will help foot the NHS bill when none of us have enough oxygen to take breath.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
November 30, 2014 at 16:36 #497001Sorry to break to this to you but we have long become a nation of petrolheads. How else could you account for the apparent popularity of Motor Racing and Top Gear? Frightening, in my opinion, but that is the world we live in.

I’ve only been to Chepstow and that was recently and I never want to go back there. Wish I’d been before they altered it though.

Can only presume it was ground level, there’s lots of Grandstand space to have a good view of the whole racecourse. If you want to be so intransigent in your place to watch the racing – then that’s up to you.The apartment blocks are not going to obscure any part of the racecourse and (the theory is) money from this build ensures Newbury remains a racecourse for the forseable future.
Members Car Park needs a second exit.
Once all the work has been completed the two Tattersalls car parks (as far as the plan I saw) will be both behind and in front of the appartments. So if I’ve understood correctly, one car park will be where the old Silver Ring is at the moment, the other is part of the old car park. During the rebuild there is obviously going to be some discomfort for those used to the old Newbury; but apart from the car parks, so far, I’ve been surprised at how little of the actual "racing" experience has been disrupted.
Racecourses in general don’t seem to like racegoers watching near to the obsticles these days. Racegoers with a close up view of possible death and injury.
Agreed, £30 for Tatts, £45 for members is asking a lot. It’s the price and gridlock afterwards that puts off racegoers. These are better on a normal race day R&S.
Value Is EverythingNovember 30, 2014 at 21:22 #497019Newbury is fast becoming the place to be,there’s a different clientele goes to Newbury, very country folk with Money. When I saw whats been built on TV yesterday my first thought was thats got to be good for the Racecourse then when we saw the most filmed image in racing, the Grandstand viewed from the water jump I thought wow what a crowd, again great for Racing. It was almost a re-assuring feeling knowing Racing is doing well in Berkshire and the crowds were there supporting.
November 30, 2014 at 22:03 #497024The grandstands are nice facilities but the view from them seems very remote and the big screen seems quite small at that distance too. The parade ring is about the only reason to attend that I can think of.

How?
You can see the whole track with a good set of bins.
My criticism yesterday would be the commentary wasn’t loud enough.Value Is EverythingNovember 30, 2014 at 22:47 #497036Newbury is fast becoming the place to be,there’s a different clientele goes to Newbury, very country folk with Money.
Big Saturdays are packed, but week days are weakly attended Gord.
Value Is EverythingNovember 30, 2014 at 23:04 #497040I went there for the Mill Reef this year, my first visit on just over a decade.
I don’t recall the viewing being any better or worse than on my last visit before all the building, but I take the poster’s point that viewing at the fences was once part of the charm and if that has been removed then the racecourse needs to seriously reconsider.
I think I have made the point before, if the commercial modernisers do get it wrong racing in some shape or form will survive, and I am sure many of us are as happy at a local point-to-point as we are a Grade 1 meeting.
December 1, 2014 at 09:23 #497058Charlie Brooks is full of praise for the new Newbury in his Telegraph column today, but he must have been parked in the wrong place, as after six paras of name dropping he ends with:
"The new car park in the centre of the course is an absolute disaster if you want to leave after the last. I thought the Cheltenham Festival was bad, but Newbury have raised the bar.
They need to be careful here. There is very little short term gain to be had generating a great audience if, at the end of the day, you ruin your customers’ day out by making them queue for 90 minutes to leave the place."
