How many ordinary people had a subsidised education at a very prestigious school, paid for by the immensely rich Paul Mellon? If that isn’t exceptional good fortune and privilege, I don’t know what is.
Well it’s exceptional good fortune, but not privilege.

September 13, 2012 at 19:44 #413020^..this isn’t about you or anyone else in the world, but Miss Balding. Of course anyone can suffer a living hell, temporarily or permanently for various reasons, no one is disputing that, but I conjecture that during her earlier life it may have seemed that way for her too.
A remarkably narrow and shallow viewpoint to take.
Boo hoo, lets all have a group hug for poor Claire Balding, the only put upon being in the history of the human race. You’ll be telling us next that had dad made her wear flared trousers. What a heartless cad he is.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
September 13, 2012 at 20:28 #413023…I don’t know why you’re getting so hot under the collar over it, I originally responded to a post by Crusty Patch which contained the following:-
”The picture of her larking about with Anneka Rice, Jennifer Saunders and Penny Smith appeared to have been commissioned by the head of waxworks at Madame Tussauds with a view to creating a few new exhibits.
It could easily have doubled as a publicity shot for the latest relaunch of Hammer Films ”.…which I felt insulted women in general, especially those of a certain age and/or less than svelte, as is so often the case when represented on t.v.
The humour contained therein resplete with attendant and was not something to be left without censure. As a frequent reader of the forum do you think I’m supposed to let this pass by..? without comment…?
Something I wouldn’t dream of doing, but imagine if I had written a post humiliating the appearance of any number of male presenters on television, – there are enough to choose from – accompanied by and I wonder how well it would have been received….?

With equanimity, good humour and a smile, to be honest.
I’m only too happy for you or anyone else to make any comments you like about men and their looks, not to mention their personalities or lack of. I would react with a chuckle and a smile and certainly wouldn’t take offence.
McCririck, Tommo, Matt Chapman, Robert Cooper and Mike Cattermole constantly have people taking the mickey out of them, including sometimes for their appearance, especially in the case of Big Mac. I would never make a generalisation about women as a whole but if you want to take offence unnecessarily on behalf of the sisterhood, it’s up to you.
If you want to take a humourless stand by complaining about a harmless post and then can’t even be bothered to read an explanation in reply, again that’s up to you but it doesn’t show great ability to defend your position.
You’ve got to remember that Clare brought this upon herself by in effect making a comment on her own appearance, admittedly a self-deprecating one, in connection with the idea of a naked glamour shoot.
Any comment made in connection with this was purely in jest and not to be taken so seriously that "censure" was needed. People will take offence at virtually anything these days.
It’s amazing how thin-skinned and touchy some people are about things that really don’t matter and aren’t intended to be taken too seriously. Certainly not something to get hot under the collar about (or anywhere else for that matter).
Keep any votes of censure for the House of Commons or the Trades Union Congress.
By the way, the use of smilies by anyone on this forum is usually intended to indicate that a point is not to be taken too seriously or is tongue in cheek and my earlier use of and was not intended to pile any further "humiliation" on women.September 14, 2012 at 10:25 #413062…I have stated my feelings on your original post and have nothing further to add on the subject, as I simply do not have the time or inclination, unlike you and one or two others it seems.
If you or Mr Steve wants to drag this out into some kind of social debate, well it’s not my forum but usually it gets transferred to the Lounge, as that’s where it belongs when things diverge like that. I no longer go there because I simply don’t have time for it, I used to but rarely these days, so I just stick to horse racing which is quite enough for me right now.
As for not reading too many of your posts, I find them difficult as they appear like a great wall of text with inadequate paragraphing and spacing. A touch of brevity would also help. The one that caught my eye was one of your briefer efforts…
I think it’s up to the writer, who expects someone to read what they have to say, to take the trouble to set their work out so as to invite an interested party to read it, it should be inviting…. it should not be up to the reader to struggle with it. I find your posts a struggle.
September 14, 2012 at 20:00 #413122I clearly haven’ got some people’s talent here for writing great long virtually un-readable paragraphs that tell you nothing that you didn’t already know ( wouldn’t mind but for some here its every single post on any subject) but I think its great that Claire is maxing out on the undoubted success of her Olympics exposure…..grab the spotlight while you can.

You’ll be telling us next that some people clearly haven’t got the talent for spelling Clare’s name correctly — or the word "haven’t".
Can you believe some people keep spelling it "Claire" even though "Clare" is clearly in the title of the thread and her name has been correctly spelled as Clare loads of times in earlier posts?
Great that Clare is "maxing out" though. She deserves wider recognition and the great praise she has received for her professionalism.

As far as racing is concerned, surely Klayre got the C4 job prior to the Olypics/Paralympics so not really ‘maxing out’?

I assume the "maxing out" that wordfromthewise is referring to is the adulation she has received in the aftermath of the Olympics and Paralympics in terms of lavish praise by quite a few newspaper columnists, sports reporters and members of the public. I assume he doesn’t mean her Channel 4 racing job.
She has also had extra publicity from the serialisation of her book in the Daily Mail and has many book signing sessions lined up. There have also been quite a few very positive interviews with her and features on her.
I am assuming this is the "maxing out" he means, not her appointment to the Channel 4 racing team.
Channel 4 did at least have enough respect for the BBC not to announce her appointment to the racing job until the Olympics, covered by Clare for the BBC, had finished.
** The Morning Line’s review of the week montage included an item on the offer to Clare of a naked photo shoot (complete with footage of her and an image of the newspaper snippet which reported the matter) BEFORE mention of the big news story of the week that John Dunlop was retiring! You couldn’t make it up….
September 20, 2012 at 22:20 #413813Not exactly on topic, but is there no show this woman won’t appear on to publicize her bloody book?
October 5, 2012 at 21:50 #415364According to an article in today’s Daily Mail Alice Plunkett, Emma Spencer and Tanya Stevenson are retaining their roles on C4 Racing from next year. While I don’t mind Alice, I really don’t get how awful Emma and terrible Tanya are keeping their jobs.

What, a pity they didn’t clear them out.
I just cannot watch Channel 4 Racing anymore when the "flat" season is on – Spencer, just ruins it for me.
Regards

It’s just beyond belief that tongue-tied Tanya should be kept on.
The prime requirement for a broadcaster should be an ability to speak fluently and grammatically in proper sentences.
A prime opportunity to bring in someone articulate has been blown. I just cannot fathom what people see in her. Her contributions are lightweight, her information is superficial in the extreme and her carefully rehearsed puns and ad libs are so contrived.
Lack of talent and broadcasting ability is certainly no bar to success in today’s dumbed-down TV world.
Emma seems to attract a lot of criticism but she is actually highly articulate and professional.
Francesca Cumani is apparently being considered for feature work. She is polished and could be a good addition.Looks like McCririck will not be getting the heave-ho, according to this follow-up paragraph in Charles Sale’s Daily Mail column today.
Still space for John
John McCririck, still the best known face in racing despite his appearances on Channel 4 having been scaled down, is due to stay on the revamped team for next year’s extended coverage. But Big Mac will only be paraded on big occasions.
Meanwhile, Clare Balding’s over-exposure continues with the news that she will be presenting Have I Got News For You. She’s in grave danger of milking it a bit too much…
Nearly forgot, she’s presenting the rugby league tomorrow on the BBC.
October 12, 2012 at 08:09 #416276Deleted and put in a different thread
October 20, 2012 at 22:19 #417639According to a report in today’s Daily Mail Rishi Persad is rejoining Channel 4 from next year. As has been suggested it really does appear as though they are going to dumb down the coverage

After his interview with Sir Henry after the race on Saturday I’m surprised anyone would give him a job.
