Like to see Nick Luck still used as a presenter along with Clare Balding.
Simon Holt & Richard Hoiles as two main commentators as they are by far the two best around.
August 13, 2012 at 17:36 #409684Crusty if Tanya could use tic-tac for her pieces to camera then she does not need to be articulate. There is a reasonable chance that a greater proportion of the viewing public will understand what she is trying to relay compared to her attempts at oration.
Good thinking, Eclipse. Not a bad idea. A jaw clamp wouldn’t go amiss as a stand-by measure in case of emergencies.
I just wish the executors of the estate of the late Rod Hull would repossess that grey felt hat she insists on wearing. Tanya can’t have made the final payments on it yet.
She did a feature during Glorious Goodwood on Winston Churchill’s connections with racing. She managed to speak fluently during the narration sections for that because obviously she could prepare, rehearse and deliver it word-perfectly because it was recorded.
It’s the off-the-top-of-the head, live stuff that she struggles with because she can’t speak fluently and coherently in sentences without tripping herself up.
This is the biggest contrast between her and Clare Balding, who is articulate, polished, unflappable and fluent. She is obviously helped by her natural very high intelligence and her education.
Clare will stick out like a sore thumb because her presentational skills are head and shoulders above any of the current Channel 4 team.
Having said that, Mike Cattermole and Emma Spencer are polished and professional. It’s just that the flirting and light-hearted nature of it all has gone a bit too far now and has become a bit wearisome.
I hope Clare knows what she’s letting herself in for. I suspect her professionalism will cause a few ructions among the Channel 4 crew. Certainly the current love-ins will have to end.
But will there be a new love-in between Clare and Tanya?August 13, 2012 at 18:01 #409691In my opinion:
OUT
Emma Spencer – oh please she drives me mad being such a useless presenter
Tom Lee – dull, dull, dull, dull, dull etc
Tommo – his time has come to move on
Lesley Graham – one of her few fans but think she’s just too lightweight
John McCririck – has brought some much needed life to C4 over the years but he is just too old and annoying nowIN
Lee McKenzie – can be a host or a third race caller for Aintree
Graham Cunningham – will bring some much needed professionalism to the show
Steve Mellish – likewise but he may prefer to stay on RUK
Sean Boyce – take over as the main betting person if he stops making silly mistakes
Richard Dunwoody – really improved in the past year, would be good at Aintree and CheltenhamKEEP
Alastair Down – still one of the best presenters in sport, though having revealed he has cancer not sure he will be around as much
Alice Plunkett – can be a bit annoying at times but knows the sport
Jim McGrath – form pundit
John Francome – form pundit
Nick Luck – posh boy hardly my favorite person in racing but certainly knows the sport well.
Simon Holt and Richard Hoiles – the best two commentators in this country.NO
Willie Carson – sorry just annoys meJUST NO AND STAY AWAY
Matt ChapmanAugust 13, 2012 at 18:07 #409692My other suggestions for next year – ONLY HAVE ONE PRESENTER, there is just no need to have two people doing it.
Unlike the current people in charge of Channel 4 – listen to your critics and be prepared to change things if they aren’t working.

By the way how can you say John Inverdale – he’s one of the best hosts in all sport
August 13, 2012 at 18:37 #409702Didn’t realise this was Athletics chat Mike…..
Of course not, I was just parodying previous posts having had two weeks’ worth of brainfug.
In reality, I’d like to see Francome, McGrath and McCririck out simply because the act is so stale now. Nick Luck would be a shoo-in for me.
Or John Inverdale, obviously.

John McCririck – has brought some much needed life to C4 over the years but he is just too old and annoying nowSome very good thoughts there generally, Phil.
I think you may be right about the ones to go. McCririck should and, I think, will go. Despite what he says about the "ravishing Clare Balding", it’s well known that they can’t stand each other, which won’t help with the politics of the new line-up.
Clare also has issues with Mike Cattermole, after he brushed off BBC attempts to recruit him years ago, leading to frostiness between them.
Emma will survive but the Pouting Heiress will definitely have her nose pushed out by Clare Balding’s no-nonsense approach.
The fake grinning and gurning of Cheshire Cat Lesley Graham would certainly be no loss and, despite the wealth of good will for Tommo, he has already been sidelined by Channel 4 so his departure would be no surprise.IN
Richard Dunwoody – really improved in the past year, would be good at Aintree and CheltenhamRichard has got charisma and would certainly contribute something. He usually did well at Aintree for the BBC.

Alastair Down – still one of the best presenters in sport, though having revealed he has cancer not sure he will be around as much
Alice Plunkett – can be a bit annoying at times but knows the sport

Nick Luck – posh boy hardly my favorite person in racing but certainly knows the sport well.Francome has had his day and is very self-indulgent now. He looks and sounds bored, as well as always taking the side of errant jockeys, no matter what they have done. His double act with Jimbo is becoming a bit tired now.
Alastair Down has, in the past, been impressive but his star is definitely on the wane now. I do wish he would stop staring so intently at Alice. It’s become a staredown when he is transfixed, with microphone welded under his chin, staring at her unblinkingly while she is doing her bit to camera.
Nick Luck is consistently professional and impressive but the Morning Line has definitely become a big yawn under Lord Snooty’s leadership. At least with Tommo it was fun, in a cringemaking sort of way!August 13, 2012 at 19:55 #409706OUT:

Could Rishi possibly better his Olympics versatility with a spectacular return to his old home of Channel 4 Racing?
Not to mention the possibility of Lord Snooty forming a new dream team at Channel 4 with Baroness Bigtits (Lydia Hislop also had a brief sojourn at Channel 4).August 13, 2012 at 20:14 #409708Looking forward to having Clare on Ch4, she’s my favourite presenter by far. Have to say I was impressed by Rishi’s Olympic coverage, he seemed much more at ease with that style of presenting
August 13, 2012 at 20:32 #409710Oh to have seen Emma Spencer’s face when she found out Strop would not be the word and poor old Luck that’s your stupid Morning Line quiz nonsense finished.
August 13, 2012 at 20:46 #409712Spot on Steve, who cares about that stupid quiz? They’ve got a big job on their hands to make the Morning Line entertaining and watchable again.
August 13, 2012 at 21:11 #409715OK, I’m being a bit shallow but we need some eye candy hence why Emma Spencer should be kept
August 13, 2012 at 21:41 #409719Francome has had his day and is very self-indulgent now. He looks and sounds bored, as well as always taking the side of errant jockeys, no matter what they have done.
IMO this is my view of Francome from the moment he joined the channel four team, probably because he done something similar in his career as a jockey and doesn’t want to be too judgemental.
Clare will probably start of with presenting the Paralympics first before going on to racing.
August 13, 2012 at 22:40 #409720Looks like Channel 4 Racing director Denise Large has had the last laugh on Highflyer, who currently produce the Channel 4 racing and who suspended her because of her involvement in IMG’s successful bid.
BBC racing producers Sunset+Vine had been the favourites to win the contract.
This snippet previously appeared in the Daily Mail over the matter.IMG ready to splash the cash on racing
IMG, who have spent heavily on establishing their radio and online TV operation live@wimbledon this year are also investing plenty of money in their bid for the production of Channel 4’s horse racing coverage.
This included special filming of super horse Frankel for their presentation. Sunset+Vine remain favourites to win the contract in an acrimonious tender battle that has seen rivals Highflyer suspend senior racing executives Denise Large and Sophie Veats because of alleged involvement in the IMG bid.August 14, 2012 at 05:23 #409729Looks like Clare Balding really will be able to have the best of all worlds because it sounds like she is going to be doing plenty of work for the BBC as well.
This report by Jim McGrath in the Daily Telegraph gives more details. Ironically, Jim’s loss of his BBC role will be Clare’s gain in her expanded racing role.
——————————————————————————————————————————-
Yesterday, soon after fans called for Balding to be made a Dame for her Olympic coverage, Channel 4 confirmed she now would be their lead presenter.
Balding announced she would combine the new, non-exclusive role with “expanded and varied programming at the BBC”, saying: “I can’t believe how lucky I am.”
The broadcaster, who has been one of the key figures in the corporation’s Olympics programming, will host Channel 4’s racing shows from next year.
“I’m delighted that this agreement means I am able to broadcast racing for Channel 4 and combine it with expanded and varied programming at the BBC,” she said.
"I love my job and I can’t believe how lucky I am. I thrive on being challenged and pushed out of my comfort zone and I’m incredibly excited at what the future holds."
Earlier this year, she wrote on Twitter: “Desperately sad that BBC TV has lost all rights to cover horse racing.”
A spokesman for Channel 4 said: "Her expertise and warmth will bring a new audience to the programmes working alongside a combination of familiar and new talent to be announced later in the year."
Balding has been one of the main faces during London 2012, presenting swimming coverage and equestrian events among her duties.
She has been hailed almost unanimously as the best presenter by fans, with several national newspapers awarding her a “gold medal” for her work.
Veteran sports presenter Des Lynam, writing for Telegraph Sport before the announcement was made, said: “At the moment no one is doing the job better in my view than La Balding.
“Whatever sport Clare turns her hand to, she becomes expert enough without ramming it down your throat and she’s been bringing her usual shiny enthusiasm and flair to the role all week.”
Balding, 41, was one of the few BBC presenters also praised for her role in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee coverage.
Speaking of her passion for horses earlier this year, Balding told the Telegraph: “I didn’t just grow up with horses, I wanted to be one.
“My father was a racehorse trainer, as were two of my uncles, both my grandfathers and my great-grandfather. My childhood was played out on the backs of ponies and horses.”August 14, 2012 at 06:17 #409731Francome has been quoted assaying he will not be continuing. Seems to have a loyalty to Andrew franklin, reading between the lines.
