After yesterday’s Selling Handicap hurdle at Catterick, it was reported that whilst there was no bid for the winner, the appropriately-named Money For Nothing “was claimed by Johnny Farrelly for £5,000”.

I was unaware that it was possible to claim a runner in a seller anyway, but more pertinently in a selling handicap where the weights are determined by the handicapper rather than the price set by connections. Anyone know how this works?

Yes always confused me this, but in a selling race all of the horses in the race are available to be claimed except the winner (which gets auctioned). You’ve pretty much got it, the difference is the claim amount doesn’t set the weight in a selling race. And conversely there’s an auction in a selling race.
