    In a 4 year old season COT may well have beaten all those I mentioned, Nathan… And there was a chance he’d improve again. But there was also a chance one of those others might improve past him… The point really, is COT’s form (according to Timeform and most good judges) is currently only fractionally in front of those other middle-distance horses I mention… So had he gone for the Breeders Cup Turf or remained in training as a four year old – to maintain the Coolmore spin of COT being “the best I’ve ever trained” / “our Frankel” business spin… Just beating them would not be enough – he’d have had to beat them many lengths to prove it.

    Going the dirt route gave them a ready made excuse for defeat and retiring him as a 3 year old means it is far easier to maintain the spin. COT remaining in training was far too much of a business risk. Unless of course… they truly believed their own hype – in which case COT would still be in training at 4.
