The much vaunted "Greatest Horse In The World" met defeat for the third successive time this season. Dropped to Gp3 company at Deauville he went off 4/5 favourite but could finish only second.

After being reported as 60% fit for his seasonal debut and then said to still have needed his second run behind Novellist at Ascot, can they really use that excuse again after today?

Has age caught up with him, or is the trainer simply unable to turn him out ready to perform to something remotely like the best equine talent on the planet?

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

1m 2f on soft ground is his ideal conditions but, even allowing for the ground, today was disappointing.

He’s just not the same horse. The Cirrus of last year would have murdered that field. It does get more difficult to recover from injury setbacks with age I believe, so I would probably say it’s due to a combination of age and setbacks. But, I would not completely bury him just yet even though his runs this season have been so far quite worrying.

CDA looks like a beaten horse now, and just doesn’t seem to run on anymore. IMO Mme C Barande-Barbe is deluded in thinking that the horse is still improving, and that he ran a good race today.

As he’s with a trainer who, by her own admission, can’t get a horse fit for a race as important as the King George on its second outing of the season, it doesn’t much matter whether he has deteriorated or not. :D

No, Mr Lake, I refer to a French gelding called Cirrus Des Aigles, whose trainer is confident will be fully fit come the 2014 Champion Hurdle – she just needs to get another ten runs into him to get him spot on.

Got a bit excited when I saw the ID name, but looks like it’s just someone taking the name of our Lord in vain. And on a Sunday as well :x

I was confused Myself, Mr Pilsen, not least because I do not know of a horse in training called Baron Of Basingstoke plus I think that, at 20 characters, it is too long a name to be accepted by the BHA?

Ricky was referring to Ian Davies, as you well know. Who are you? I would have said that moron Mr. Wilson but your grammar is too good for you to be him.

I always think that a bit of narcissistic back slapping, and "in the know " quips are the best way to stimulate a healthy forum debate.

If I was ”in the know,” Coggy, I would! :D

I agree with you, though – the thread is going off-topic.

Joking aside, I don’t want to knock Cirrus Des Aigle’s trainer but, in an era when trainers can get double-digit age staying chasers ready to run for their lives after a year off the track it has to be a BIT disappointing she’s still talking about ”needing the run” after the horse gets beaten in a race as important as the King George on its second run of the year.

Yeah, but in her heart of hearts, does she really believe it??
Probably not. She has already more than proven her ability to train this horse to the highest level.

I heard somewhere that coming back from his trip abroad at the end last year, he looked a shell of horse and lost all condition. I heard this before the King George run. I just wonder whether that has left a mark or whether age has worked its poisonous magic?
