The Racing Post did an article yesterday on owners and trainers that seem to do well over the Christmas holiday period.
They listed Trevor Hemmings as having a 33% s/r since 1996 with 7 winners from 21 runners on Boxing Day.
However they should have done an article on what stables seem to land gambles basically to pay for the Christmas for the stable staff.
Gary Moore has been able to do it for many years He used to target the NH runners (Stormy Sky) a few years ago was a major winning gamble and the staff apparently were all on Salut St Cloud and Cusson this week ( both easy winners).
Terry Biddlecombe /Hen Knight often have a nice priced novice hurdler winning at the first Hereford meeting in January. (normally a horse running for the very first time and the time when the West Lockhinge yard hold the Christmas party) winners have been up to 50/1!
Howard Johnson has in the past let it be known winning horses have been carrying stable money when winning just before Christmas.
Tom Tate, Jamie Osborne and Sue Smith are other that have done this in the past.

December 21, 2006 at 09:37 #34113Since it seems to be so easy to ‘decide’ to have a winner, I don’t understand why most of these yards don’t do it more often.
December 21, 2006 at 17:03 #34114Hello,
Many, many years ago Owen Brennan used to "treat" his staff with some good laid out horses, usually at Towester, Sedgefield the smaller meetings on Boxing Day.
Not only to win, but some interesting Novice Hurdlers, and big odds, would land a place! ;)
