Annoying that, while so many will focus on Broad taking the final wicket, the REAL story – that gutless Chezza somehow ponced a tiny profit – will pass virtually unnoticed.

Cracking series tbf – England should have won it, really IMO.

    Cavalier declaration decision cost them.

As much as it was entertaining the result of it all was that the Aussies retained the series

But Nathan can literally do no wrong in my eyes – the Memes thread is arguably the best ever, never mind just this year, Lounge thread in TRF history.

And I need to thank CAS (and Richard) for resurrecting an at least passing interest in cricket for me this summer.

I even managed to fluke a few quid – to be spent on cheese in CAS’s honour – out of it.

    You’re all wrong, it’s convicts ;-)

I think 2-2 was a fair result, England played some great stuff but ultimately couldn’t get over the line despite being odds on at some point in all five matches (a slightly crude measure but bookies’ odds are rarely that far wrong). The four completed matches could have gone either way and I think a drawn series or one match winning margin could all have been described as fair. 3-1 would have flattered the Aussies somewhat. It is a shame about the weather in the drawn match but that’s the way it goes. You could point to any number of moments that made the difference.

I really enjoyed it, you could even say it was a series for th-*gets gunned down by Chezza’s Uzi*

Agree a drawn series was a fair result. England shaded it but perhaps did not do enough to deserve a win.

As I feared at the time, the first Test was crucial. England had a big chance to win and did not take it. If they had, they would probably have won the series.

An excellent Test series, enjoyed despite my exposure to it being limited to the wireless and televised highlights on BBC2

Enjoyed too the chatter on here, thanks

Has there ever been an August bereft of Test cricket? Such a shame

‘Has there ever been an August bereft of Test cricket? Such a shame’

I think I heard somewhere that this is the first Ashes series ever not to have any play in August (in England obviously…) Don’t know about all test summers on these shores.

They were pushing their Hundred coverage on TMS. I borrowed a digital radio to listen to the Ashes while working, it’s already been returned. I don’t have a particular problem with the Hundred in itself, like anything else I’m not interested in, I can simply ignore it but it is a shame it messes about with the Test schedule. Surely it could have co-existed with the Ashes? If it’s aimed at a different audience then surely they wouldn’t miss the Test players, there aren’t that many.

It was a good series but to my mind did not come close to 2005, mainly because of two issues raised above.

Firstly, it was compressed into too short a timescale. No Test cricket in August is a terrible decision which shows no regard for the history and traditions of the game.

Secondly, the 2005 series was the last summer of Test matches to be shown on free to air television. It reached a much wider audience and became a huge talking point. I remember almost everyone in work being interested. Not so many people were talking about it this time around.

I know live Test cricket is very unlikely to ever return to the BBC or C4 but its disappearance behind Sky’s pay wall has not been good for the game’s profile.

Yes Cork, I was in Sixth Form and everyone was sat around watching the Fifth Test in their free time as it took place in early September having obviously got into it over the summer.

Sky’s coverage of most sports is generally pretty good but even for a sports nut like me who can also afford it, it’s hard to justify the cost when there’s a lot else going on in life and I’d struggle to get my money’s worth to be honest. Like Drone it was TMS and highlights for me. The BBC live feed was also good for uploading clips quickly.

The BBC did a good job with the highlights.

I do have Sky so could watch it live. Although I have considered giving it up. I am not especially interested in football and seldom watch any live games. I only watch a bit of cricket and golf.

I think I am right in saying Sky Sports Racing is available as part of the basic Sky package and does not require a Sky Sports subscription.
