Pendil would have won 2 Gold Cups with a decent jockey on board, nowt to do with the distance.
March 24, 2025 at 19:22 #1724784Much as I loved Pendil, doubt if he’d have beaten Captain Chisty that day
March 24, 2025 at 19:54 #1724786Talking of plodders beating Rolls Royces, I nominate Cool Ground beating The Fellow by a short head in 1992. I’m talking through my pocket of course as I had 33/1 ante-post. It’s not clear how I came to make the bet; I think it was the exoticness of Doumen/Kondrat and the name, The Fellow, just resonated.
Swap the jockeys and the placings would certainly have been changed!March 24, 2025 at 21:51 #1724790Interesting suggestion Moody Man. I like that the Gold Cup places a premium on stamina though! The flashier three milers have the King George.
I don’t mind the four day Festival, and think that a lot of the problems seen in recent years are reflective of wider issues affecting the sport rather than the move to four days. I do agree that the mares’ events dilute a number of other races though. I’m all for there being mares’ championship races, but they needn’t happen at the Festival.
March 24, 2025 at 22:26 #1724793As far as I am concerned it is a three day event to me it is all over come Thursday and we are left with a rather mundane Friday.
The more I know the less I understand.
October 19, 2025 at 17:06 #1742527October 19, 2025 at 17:15 #1742529Another 6 races , so how they doing that , veterans races , another bumper …
October 19, 2025 at 17:26 #1742530It’s not adding more races, HDLG. It’s moving the start from Tuesday to Wednesday, so that Gold Cup day becomes a Saturday.
Absolute stupidity, if it goes ahead. Haven’t they seen what has happened to the Derby?
October 19, 2025 at 18:25 #1742531Yeah lets have NH racing’s Blue Riband event run on a Saturday where it will be relegated to ITV4 due to a clash with the Six Nations Rugby, which will take precedent over racing.
It is a stupid idea which will not solve the issue Cheltenham are currently facing with decreasing attendances, it will mean the exact same issue will now instead be moved to a Saturday which is a much more competitive day in terms of attracting crowds especially with the Six Nations on at the same time……potentially there might even be some crossover with fans of both sports having to pick one or the other
October 19, 2025 at 19:01 #1742533Totally agree LD73, it’s a terrible idea.
Rather than fixing any of the problems that the Festival faces currently, it manages to throw some extra ones into the mix for good measure.
October 19, 2025 at 21:27 #1742546My goodness there must some clueless numpties at the helm at JCR.have they not noticed The Derby slowly sinking without a trace on a Saturday?
October 19, 2025 at 22:56 #1742549October 19, 2025 at 23:10 #1742550I thought they’d resolved everything by knocking 30p off a pint of Guinness.
The more I know the less I understand.
October 20, 2025 at 07:34 #1742601Time i wait in queue with all the peaky blinder wannabees for a pint guinness id have 1 pint per day , maybe 2 , so over 4 days 2.40 to the good , defo worth putting in mix when i decide if iam going .
Tbh the more the crowds drop off the keener i am on going .October 20, 2025 at 09:50 #1742607It could be a positive if it was done correctly. I do find the fact that everyone is at work does make it harder for me and my friends to get together to watch the festival.
If it isn’t on ITV1 then it should be a non starter. It should only be done if it remains fully backed as the flagship of the week.
Gold Cup day needs to be better. Apart from the Gold Cup its the worst day for me. The Albert Bartlett is dreadful and the Triumph, generally, is equally so. Less said about the hunter chase the better.
You could get clubs and pubs chokka to watch the festival on a saturday. I know it will have to compete with the footie, but i think they could sit side by side. I dunno, might be worth giving it a go and can always revert back if it doesnt work.
October 20, 2025 at 10:01 #1742609People get these jobs and think they need to make changes to justify their position, even if they make things worse. Anyone remember that clown Jamie Stier?
Far too many races have already been moved to a Saturday, to the detriment of the sport.
And what would happen to the Midlands Grand National?October 20, 2025 at 10:25 #1742610Good point I’m sure Uttoxeter would be none too pleased.
The more I know the less I understand.
