Do horses actually see the obstacles? TV pictures are a lot brighter than it is in reality.
January 24, 2026 at 16:36 #1751683I’ve always detested this meeting and today that has just amplified.
Run in the heart of winter. Ground is always in poor condition and that combined with the stiffer new course means that most don’t recover in time for The Festival.
Far too many meetings ran at Cheltenham full stop. One of the 3 meetings December through January needs to go imo.
January 24, 2026 at 16:40 #1751686What this has shown is just how quickly they can get a race on from horses being in the paddock to the tape going up.
January 24, 2026 at 16:45 #1751688Have they got a thermal imager for the photo?
January 24, 2026 at 16:51 #1751691RTV have just called this a fantastic days racing , do they do the show from the bar …after a quick sniff in the toilets , I’m off to watch SSR , Goldies got one in , I reckon at least 1 more to follow
January 24, 2026 at 17:00 #1751700Glad I stuck to RTV for a bit , that print was darker than Nico’s mood , what a joke , will the runner up appeal
January 24, 2026 at 17:00 #1751701Parts of it were so I guess they felt they needed to put a positive spin on things even though the final hour of the day was shambolic to say the least.
They just showed the photo finish of the race but had they not said that is what it was, you wouldn’t have had a clue about what the dark grainy picture was actually of…….
January 24, 2026 at 17:01 #1751702It was Nickys training schedule for the Hill …
January 24, 2026 at 17:02 #1751703LD I love racing but that was a shitshow today
January 24, 2026 at 17:15 #1751711Did Sir Gino take a false step between the first 2 hurdles? To me he didn’t look comfortable before he went very lame.
January 24, 2026 at 17:25 #1751718Prob where the fracture took place
January 24, 2026 at 17:31 #1751720HDLG – Overall I do agree but although it is hard to lets also not forget the great weight carrying performance of Favori De Champdou under 12st in the Glenfarclass, Ma Shantou bursting onto the Stayers Hurdle picture with his impressive Cleeve win and the great finish that Donnacha and Jagwar produce in the Handicap Chase.
All of those horses will likely go to Cheltenham in March with good to strong chances in their respective races, sadly all of that was totally overshadowed by Sir Geno’s injury and the total lunacy of the last race being run in/under farcical (and potentionally dangerous) conditions which ultimately will be all the day is remembered for.
On the Sir Geno front it is interesting to note that the RTV pictures picked up that jumping one of the hurdles down the back you could clearly see that he had an oddly high tail carriage (something I hadn’t noted him doing before), which may have been an indication of something being not quite right even at that earlier stage of the race.
January 24, 2026 at 17:39 #1751722Realistically how many festival winners have we seen today …I’d say 2 at best , both Skeltons
January 24, 2026 at 17:40 #1751723When you watch Sir Gino jump the 3rd you can clearly see his tail carriage alter as though something is hurting him. When watching it live I wasn’t totally shocked when he went lame 3 out. Something didn’t look right.
January 24, 2026 at 23:09 #1751758Well all things considered, it is a lot better than we all initially feared:
Henderson said: “Sir Gino was transferred from Cheltenham to the Three Counties Veterinary Clinic and following scans and x-rays he does have a fractured pelvis. Having spoken to the great team caring for him, although this is obviously significant, he is comfortable and stable.
“This is great news to us all. The prognosis is guarded and further examinations over the next few days will be able to determine the extent of the injury and any prognosis for the future.
“Thank you to everyone for their messages and concerns which are much appreciated and we will keep everyone up-to-date with any further news but the fact that he’s comfortable tonight is the most important thing.”
January 25, 2026 at 06:09 #1751783January 25, 2026 at 08:06 #1751796I wonder if the runner up will be compensated not to appeal … If he was mine the appeal would be in at 9.01 Monday
