following news from alan lee in the times that cheltenham could stage the jumps finale instead of sandown, after today i think it could happen.
the bet365 gold cup had a top rated horse of just 145 and looked like a summer jumping race, it seems sandown are incapable of producing watered good to soft ground.
the course commantater could not be heard on the steppings of the stand leaving a strange atsmosphear
only the parade of champions and tony mccoys amazing ride saved the dayApril 26, 2009 at 12:23 #223682Leave it at Sandown. Why mess again? So Sandown doesn’t give good to soft ground – GOOD its about time decent ground horses were allowed to race in conditions they like. I’m sick to death of this watering and obsession with good to soft ground its bllx.
Yesterdays meeting was one of the most enjoyable Saturdays for a good while.
Were there umpteen deaths at Sandown on this hideously fast surface? No!!If the meeting is switched to Cheltenham or anywhere else for tthat matter I will personally be contacting some people with very harsh correspondence.
April 26, 2009 at 14:35 #223698leave the meeting at sandown the ground was fine on saturday when you get decent ground you see good horses run up to there form paco boy, tartan bearer, pipedreamer etc.
April 26, 2009 at 14:53 #223702It was a relatively poor handicap considering the money on offer but it is surely impossible to say there would have been a better class field if the race was staged at Cheltenham. Some races are unfortunately always going to suffer due to the number of quality races that are staged in the final months of the season.
April 26, 2009 at 15:46 #223713I don’t know why we don’t just run every remotely decent race at Cheltenham – seems to be the way the authorities want it.
They’ve gained a number of races in recent years – most disappointingly the Dipper Novices Chase yet never seem to lose any.

I have so many fond memoriesof races at Sandown I would hate for them to take anything more away than aready has been taken.
Maybe the management needs some new blood. I would rather see some decent sponsorship bring this meeting back to what it used to be.
Compare it to the Guiness on Wednesay and there’s your answer.
It’s a lot more prize money and if I had a good staying chaser I know where I’d be running him.
Days apart and the powers that be can’t see that if the cash isn’t there you will lose all the decent horses to the other race.
i.e why would PN send the likes of Kauto Star or Denman to Sandown giving lumps of weight away for less money than they could pick up a few days later? When they put the late Wichita Lineman up as fav for the race and Alberta’s was also in the top half of the betting, I couldn’t believe it as there was never a hope in hell of them running in preference to Ireland
Sadly the days of great horses running in what was once the Whitbread are sadly over.
April 26, 2009 at 17:50 #223729Fists – our money pales into insignificance when compared to Ireland and France. Nicholls would (if he thought the ground safe) surely wait another month and run for what’s effectively £800,000 over 3m 5f in a WFA race at Auteuil.
While the race is a two bit handicap that’s what they’ll get – handicappers.

Cheltenham has more than enough big meetings and it is the a stupid idea to race their,
Running it at Cheltenham would be the same as having the two FA Cup semis at Wembley in that the Festival could be devalued as that is what all the top trainers are aiming for from early October.
The mixed meeting is in a good position as it brings both codes together and this is needed as all to often we have the odd pop at each other and its good that both flat and jumps fans can have two annual meet ups in a year.
The Gold Cup at Sandown might not be getting Denman in it or Kauto Star which is a shame but it is still a good top quality handicap and should be kept at its rightfull home of Sandown.
