Learn to pee, discreetly, into a bottle or a pint glass
But dont leave it in the bar :o
i place all my bets on the phone there.
January 31, 2007 at 15:35 #37368carry a hip flask, getting a drink is a nightmare…I carry 3 in my handbag for each day and I go to all days…Sometimes if I am lucky I go to the owners and trainers bar….
Warm clothes are a must….its always chilli there, due to the layout ofb the course in the valley….
Do not carry loads of money…pick pockets are a main job at Chelt…
Anything else just ask…I am from Chelt, and go to every meeting…
January 31, 2007 at 16:21 #37369Hello,
The secret for an enjoyable day..is get there early !!
The Itabraq bar is open at 10:30ish…If you have a reasonable amount of beer prior to 12:40, the bar throngs later are irrelevant ..
Anyway, the Guinness Bars are very quick.
Don’t be put off by a phalanx of men at the bar, they soon dwindle down as the Guinness Taps are running continually.
The Club badge is definitely better value than Tatts.
The bars prior to racing are clearer.
Get ALL your bets on early, possibly every race covered prior to the first race. Don’t worry yourself about getting "the best price" and all that crap, overall it does not make a blind bit of difference, swings & roundabouts etc.
If arriving early at the station, Walk to the Course !!, and likewise, walk back…don’t be put off by some of the contributing lazy forumites, it ain’t far !! ;)
As for Food,… get a grip son !!
It is only one day and your excitement and copious amounts of Guinness will head off those hunger pangs.
Start with a good brekkie and bring a buttie with you [Not a Picnic Basket!]
Viewing: The racecourse is like a roller coaster, so if you position yourself early you should see something thru the alcoholic haze, and the big screen helps.
For the last race before you head off, watching from just past the winning post is handy.
Also, if you do head for the wretched bus back to the station. Boarding ain’t easy…it reminds me of disembarking the Titanic..a mad surge…and there is no respect for women, children and vomiting drunkards like me! Possibly they have more police now than my day..
Just enjoy, don’t get hung up about the pushing and shoving, there ain’t anything you can do about it!!
regards,
doyley

off on Gold Cup day last year in contrast to the year Kicking King won when it must have been the hottest March day in history!February 1, 2007 at 00:14 #37371Quote: from PAULCS on 10:38 pm on Jan. 31, 2007[br]
Froze my b*****ks
off on Gold Cup day last year in contrast to the year Kicking King won when it must have been the hottest March day in history!
Was bloody freezing there last year on Gold Cup day……. i was stood near where the horses leave the paddock when they were leaving for the Triumph and it started to snow!
February 1, 2007 at 07:22 #37372Too right Paul,
The year KK won was sweltering, so much so that one of my mates – a bit the worse for wear got to the course with us around 1:45 and sat down outside for a kip opposite the Guiness tent and never woke up till after racing
Another similar day weather wise was the Tuesday when French Ballerina won the first – a particularly nice start.
Last year on GC day I couldn’t even drink to keep warm, there was no room in the bars and stood outside the black stuff was freezing my hands, putting it down didn’t help as the wind kept blowing it over :(
February 5, 2007 at 16:29 #37373I’d encourage anyone planning to attend to get there early one day and walk the track (you can generally walk around the ‘road’ on the inside of the track without a problem so long as you’re not getting in anyone’s way). It puts a different perspective on the whole course and I found it fascinating.
February 5, 2007 at 18:16 #37374Def going on the Tuesday, got a friends badge to use, so that was a result.
Does anyone know how i go about ordering train tickets in advance to see if i can get them any cheaper? Looked on the trainline and National Rail and they are all offering me the same return of £59 from Ely.
