Anybody going next week?
October 26, 2014 at 19:11 #493546Not me

9 of the last 10 winners had an OR in the range 151-159, the other (Ollie Magern in 2007) was unrated.
Good luck to all who do attend.
October 26, 2014 at 21:58 #493557Last year was brilliant with Tidal Bay winning
November 1, 2014 at 02:42 #494012Took a chance on Wayward Prince @ 33’s earlier in the week, and hoping he can make the 3…………hot little race though, and he’ll have to hope a few of his "quite" decent rivals have an off day.
November 1, 2014 at 08:20 #494034I thought it was down to 7 now [?]. Either way I have to back him after not doing so last year.
November 1, 2014 at 09:07 #494046I’ll be ok with it being the 7 moe, after doing him ante-post………..still going to be tough though.

Double Ross (152)
Medermit (156)
Taquin De Seuil (159)Taquin De Seuil for me, AP gets on really well with this horse having ridden him on 7 of his 10 wins. Whether he will be good enough to take on Silviniaco Conti remains to be seen. I am hoping the recent run at Newton Abbot has got him up to a good enough fitness level.
Good luck !!
November 1, 2014 at 15:48 #494139The last Gold Cup took a hard blow today.
Conti got beaten, Bolster too and On His Own ran poorly at Down Royal. However Hobbs’ form has been impressive during the last few weeks. There was Wishfull Thinking in the Old Roan lately, he also got 4 winners during this week (River Deep, Sykes, Dry Ol’Party, Bertie Boru). The job is well done, congratulations to him.
November 1, 2014 at 16:20 #494144That was a dire effort from Silviniaco Conti today and he’ll have to bounce back big time to feature in the top races this season.
Paul Nicholls was apparently satisfied and believes he needed the race today. Little consolation to the horse’s backers today I would think.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
November 1, 2014 at 16:49 #494148The Giant Bolster
‘s record shows that this race isn’t too relevant to the Gold Cup. He looked more temperamental than I’ve seen him before though.
It was very poor from
Silviniaco Conti
. He probably didn’t even run to 150 today. He got beaten on his seasonal return last year, but at least managed to threaten top notchers like Cue Card and Dynaste – this was a huge step in the wrong direction.
Congrats to
Menorah
, who is one of those who just pops up out of nowhere sometimes. With the Hobbs yard flying (especially the horses in these colours), in hindsight this time was as good as any.
Taquin Du Seuil
will have connections scratching their heads. He stayed on best of the placed horses, but still got handsomely beaten by Menorah. So, we now know he gets three miles, but is he near championship class at any distance?
November 1, 2014 at 17:31 #494156S Conti has baffled me since his hurdling days – I’ve never been able to nail him to a particular level, and I doubt I’ll ever succeed in doing so. I’ve never backed him either.
I did think Fehily wasn’t making enough use of him today, but the tameness with which he went out suggests he was going about as fast as he could.
Jonjo will have TDS ready for the festival, where I expect to see a different horse altogether.
Medermit continues climbing hoof over hoof back toward decent form. He might never win a gold cup, but I wouldn’t rule out a fine run in the National.
I was impressed with Cole Hardin, even more so when I discovered one bookmaker who’d neglected to change his pre-race 33/1 for the World Hurdle

I was a bit surprised he wasn’t a little more aggressive with him today, especially with the quicker ground. It could be that the horse needs soft to be at his best now.
I’d be a bit wary about Cole Hardin after a win in a three runner affair where the odds on fav looked a bit of a dodgepot. At Fisher’s cross looks a shadow of the horse who beat The New One and went on to win the Albert Bartlett.

November 3, 2014 at 13:03 #494393Not giving up on Conti just yet but he was disappointing. Just hope that Nicholls’ optimism is correct and that he needed the run.

I’m hoping he bounces back as well but I thought Paul Nicholls was trying to convince himself as much as anyone else in believing that the horse will have needed the run.
In an ominous portent just before the race, Mick Fitzgerald stated that he had spoken to Paul Nicholls and that the trainer had told him you can’t leave horses much short of fitness on these seasonal debuts in class races because it will actually have a detrimental effect to their season, rather than a beneficial one.
With the way Silviniaco Conti ran in the Charlie Hall, you would need to think that, unless he
did
badly need the run, he has been bitterly disappointing there. It would seem to contradict completely the quote given by Mick Fitz in the minutes before the race.
One bit of hope is that the horse has had disappointments before and bounced back but he did fold like The Who’s Mama’s Squeeze Box in the closing stages last Saturday and needs to get that off his chest next time and perhaps Daddy won’t be getting much sleep at night worrying about that.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Yes, this horse is a bit of a puzzle. To my eyes he has looked something of a slow boat. You would almost think he would be better off forcing the issue rather than being ridden for a change of pace. The problem is his jumping doesn’t look convincing enough to do that (at least with McCoy on board) and we all know how often the stable’s runners adopt those tactics even if they might actually suit the horse.
If you are trying to be optimistic you might cling to the idea that the trainer has again ‘left something to work on’ and that in the future softer ground might help his cause/inconvenience the opposition. I would have thought a trip to Ireland would be the likely way forward.
