Don’t think I’ve seen a thread devoted to this – unless it’s buried amongst the rancour devoted to various jockeys and racing channels…
"Irish private equity firm FL Partners has bought the Racing Post newspaper from British group Trinity Mirror for £170m (€244m).
Trinity Mirror said it would make donations off £10m to four specified charities linked to the horse racing industry, at the suggestion of Sheikh Mohammed, who founded the title in 1986".[/color:2yjohsmp]
OK..so the bulk buying policy of Godolphin hasn’t endeared him to many on this board, but I think this is a fabulous gesture by Sheikh Mohammed. On top of this he’s also devoted $1million towards finding a cure to equine grass sickness whuch of course claimed the life of Dubai Millenium.
It’s only a shame he couldn’t have donated some more to the Levy I suppose !!
October 2, 2007 at 19:29 #117664Such a gesture would mean much more were it his own money.
October 2, 2007 at 21:16 #117681It is his money. Sheik Mo. owns the rights to the title. He could have charged what he liked to transfer those rights to the new owner and pocketed the proceeds.

October 3, 2007 at 03:39 #117695And Sheik Mo has also played his part in making sure racing stays on terrestrial TV (new sponsorship deal with Channel 4).
Without terrestrial coverage, I reckon the game would be dead within 20 years. (Or would end up resembling something akin to Point To Point racing).
Racing fans have a lot to be grateful to him for.
October 3, 2007 at 07:59 #117711davidjohnson, do you think these charities would be getting anything if Sheikh Mohammed had no involvement in the RP and it’s sale ? Of course not.
October 3, 2007 at 18:34 #117817Full marks to Sheikh Mo.
What on earth are you on about, DJ?
October 3, 2007 at 18:51 #117821Perhaps I’m being harsh, but $10m is a drop in the ocean to a man reportedly worth $14b that spends more than that amount on a whim purchasing bloodstock that is then shipped to Dubai never to see the racecourse again. I guess it would be a different kettle of fish if his personal fortune hadn’t been handed to him on a plate.
Forgive me but my anti-Sheikh Mohammed stance only comes as a result of so much fawning over him in the press.
October 3, 2007 at 20:45 #117842if he gave it to the injured jockeys fund (with a clause it wasnt used for litigation) it would be a great gesture),chipmunk
