I’ve always enjoyed The Morning Line. Content wise its always been aimed at weekend punters, nothing wrong with that at all. Its on way too early for a Saturday though. 11 – 12 then over to Football Focus would be perfect.
March 1, 2008 at 21:18 #147738It should go back to its old 9am start but i think C4 are more concerned about their T4 viewers who probably dont think that horse racing is "COOL"
Maybe the programme could have some new things added to it for example on something like E4 they could have a programme at about 90 mins before the first race where punters could ask questions to the C4 people and maybe have a quiz for example between Annual Members of the host racecourse againts a team from say the racing media or members from a racecourse on a reciprocal visit.

I always liked it when it followed Wide World of Sports which was a great programme in itself

8am’s too early for me, thank god for Channel 4+1… lol….actually, Channel 4+1+1 would be even more suitable for me.
March 1, 2008 at 21:54 #147755Sorry you didn’t like the wind angle
It’s something I have never used, I wouldn’t be confident it would still be blowing and in the right direction by race time especially if I wasn’t there, I may be misguided but I would also expect the trainer and jockey to take things like that into account for me. Everyone’s entitled to use whatever angle they think, it would be pretty boring if we all thought the same, as it was Tana River didn’t last long in front anyway did he and the wind seemed to have dropped by the late afternoon.
Can I ask you something Richard about your commentating please?
Do you commentate any differently for C4 than you do for the racecourse apart from handing over to JF mid race?
I thought today about you and Simon last Saturday that you both seem to
commentate more quietly for C4, I’ve thought the same in the past about the pair of you, is it just my imagination?Neil Watson, the morning line is repeated at 9.00am on C4+1.
March 2, 2008 at 07:22 #147810Certainly think you can be more conversational and a bit slower (as opposed to quieter which really is in the hands of the sound desk) because you know everyone can see pictures and quality of sound is good and the whole thing is a bit more intimate.
When you are aslo doing course/betting shops/ATR or RUK etc then diction needs to be better (sound systems on course often worse) and increase content and repitition because say in case of shops there may be interruptions (Crayford hares running !) or distractions so wrong to assume that if yoiu have said something once everyone will have always heard it.
On some big days on track you will of course get reaction to things you say which probably cranks it up a bit as well whereas some of the best commentators on terrestrial – O’Sullevan, Benaud etc proved less can be more.
March 2, 2008 at 07:35 #147812Once again, thank you, Richard, for coming on here to answer any criticisms, positive or negative. I only wish more from your profession would have the courage to do so.
Colin
March 2, 2008 at 07:59 #147816As I have probably said before Colin, constructive criticism and debate is what makes this site so successful.
Having started out as an enthusiastic racegoer to have found a way of working in the sport and to have the opportunity to communicate that to others is something I sincerely hope I will never take for granted.
You won’t improve much if you are not prepared to listen.
March 2, 2008 at 08:06 #147817Thanks Richard, I meant a quieter style rather than sound terms, just didn’t explain it well.
What’s happened to that old horse of yours, is he having a rest or have you retired him?
March 2, 2008 at 08:32 #147821Finally ended my long association with Blue Sky Thinking yesterday.
Had him since he was 2yo so now nearly seven years, ran 29 times for me winning eight including allowing me the massive thrill of calling my own horse to win at Ascot.
Injury dogged him throughout his career initially niggling but latterly one specific suspensory.
He is back sound and in work and I have donated him to the yard where he has been leading the two year olds and may have occasional runs for the amateurs and apprentices.Sadly the economics, and the arrival of a recent two legged addition to the household made the economics of campaigning him at claiming level inconsistent with the strains having to run so regularly put on his legs and Karl is adamant retiring to a field where he would be ridden once a week is at this stage premature.
A great horse to have owned.
March 2, 2008 at 17:34 #147890this is to inform. those who dont know that the morning line is repeated on one of there other channels at 9am because i whatch it last sat
March 2, 2008 at 20:16 #147923its channel 4+1 page no 13.starts at 9am
March 2, 2008 at 21:12 #147941Todays headwind was nowhere near as strong as friday (not as strong as the forecast either).
That’s as maybe, but the overnight wind was very, very strong and very gusty, carrying on into the early morning. Ergo at the time that the Morning Line was aired, the wind could still have been a real concern.
So maybe you should get out of bed earlier, Ginge!
