I thought that the penalty decision was correct and it was a stupid unnecessary challenge from the Arsenal defender. I like the style of soccer that Arsenal play but Wenger should appoint a new captain as Gallas is useless at it and lacks motivation and leadership skills. The sight of him rushing up the field towards the end of the game and making a ridiculous dive in the penalty area was pathetic.

I expect Liverpool to defeat boring Chelsea in the semis – they are a different team in the Champions league and have defeated Chelsea in it before.

Liverpool have been on the right end of some 50-50 decisions so far in the knockout stages – the sending off of Materazzi at home to Inter Milan and the penalty last night. Not saying that the decisions were blatantly wrong, just that Liverpool got 2 VERY big decisions there.

Chelsea tie too tight to call although Chelsea’s match sandwiched between the 2 semi-finals is at home to Man Utd so a very big 7 days for them while Liverpool’s league match is away to Birmingham.

Why do Chelsea have no league match the weekend before the first semi-final tie BTW?

Ahh isn`t that sweet – gotta love it when dippers are getting as bitter and twisted as City fans. But i cant blame them, this year`s title makes it 17 – one fewer than Liverpool. It`s only a matter of time before we take the lead.

I dont like Chelsea but id rather see them win the league than United.

    Liverpool – Chelsea

where do you start on this one, as a red fan i would of liked the second leg at anfield like the past two times liverpool have meet chelsea in this competition, so i think Benitez will have to go for a win in the first leg whilst trying not to concede an away goal which will be tough if chelsea are at full strenght. so on that note advantage chelsea.

chelsea are very much still in the hunt for the title and will have one eye on that competition so even though they have a big squad cant afford to rest their best players whilst i am sure liverpool will rest their key players before both legs of the semi final so will be fresher. will cech be back? if not he will be a big loss to the blues. advantage liverpool.

so a penalty shoot out it is then.

As Nigel Winterburn suggested on Sky Sports News, had Arsenal been awarded a penalty at the Emirates then the foul on Babel wouldn’t have had a mention in Wednesday morning’s press. As they didn’t, everyone is up in arms, probably because it was Liverpool on the receiving end as much as anything else.

Whether it was a penalty or not – and it clearly was, as Fabregas had made an obvious attempt to hinder Babel before Toure brought him down – it was given, and we scored another anyway just to make sure. We can debate who deserved it more across 180 minutes (a fairly hollow argument as we deserved to be beaten in London, but were well worth our victory at home) but at the end of the day Liverpool scored five, and Arsenal only three.

My uncle and cousin are season ticket holders at Chelsea and the hate aimed at the red half of Merseyside is unbelievable, especially from a club who, previous to Abramovic’s intervention, could easily be described as ‘tin pot’.

Chelsea are a team with strength in every position, but they also have discernable weaknesses, and with Liverpool now playing slightly more attacking football any weak links will be thoroughly exposed. Carvalho (a cheat and having a bad season for me) and Terry will have trouble containing Crouch in the air, and neither can hope to handle Torres on the ground. Drogba is always a threat, and a player I like when he’s not diving, but we have a superb defensive partnership in Sami ‘Lurch’ Hyypia and Martin Skrtel and I’d be hopeful that they can deal with him successfully.

Midfield will be where this tie is won and lost. Joe Cole has given us a headache every time he’s played in the last 2 seasons, so he’ll need to be shadowed relentlessly (probably by Kuyt, from whom you’re guaranteed maximum effort) but other than him, where do Chelsea have the edge? Steven Gerrard is most certainly a better player than Frank Lampard, Makelele will be matched (and then some) by Mascherano and Michael Ballack isn’t the force he seemingly was at Bayern Munich. The only trouble we may have is on the wings, with Cole running at Carragher (who has, if I’m honest, had his day now and isn’t worth a starting place on this season’s form) and Wright-Phillips at Aurelio (a poor signing by Benitez – give me Riise any day).

Chelsea were lucky at Anfield at the start of the season, and rarely threatened at Stamford Bridge (the Carling Cup win started with a fluke and we were playing horrificly at the time). If we play like we did on Tuesday, allowing for the 25 minutes when we were made to look like training cones, then we can do the Bridgers home and away.

Because their game away to Everton was brought forward from the weekend at late notice to tonight because Sky wants to show the match live on satellite. Chelsea won’t be able to rest any of their players though as it is a must win game for them

2.28 Chelsea on Betfair to win at Everton. If I were to have a bet I’d be tempted to take that. They played well even though unable to beat a revived Wigan on Monday. Everton seem a bit flat at present and don’t have much to play for. I expected Chelsea to be about even money and, although without Lampard and Drogba are starting with Joe Cole and Anelka, both potential match winners.

Good luck to Man Utd tonight, I hope they wallop overrated Barcelona.

It was a strange game last night between Liverpool and Chelsea, I thought Liverpool looked comfortable until the injury time own goal, I thought Riise could have kicked the ball instead of headering it.

All to play for now but it may just have swung Chelsea’s way, though you can never tell with Liverpool as they have such a fantastic record in the champions league

A Rangers fan wishing the Rags well?? I’ve heard it all now!

The way my selections are going at the moment I’m tipping United big-time with that underrated Cristiano Ronaldo getting a hat-trick

Indeed we were comfortable until the unfortunate injury time incident, and whilst I agree that the ball was there to be smashed into row Z Riise’s decision was wholly indicative of a man low on confidence. His position in the team has been questioned for well over a season now, and when he’s being kept out of the starting eleven by the talentless Fabio Aurelio (he is truly awful in my book and has done nothing since arriving, aside from scoring a wonder goal at Bolton) he’s bound to be tense.

I still say that Benitez is the biggest problem at Liverpool and that we’ll never challenge for the Premiership under his reign. You only need to look at our Champions League record to see that he’s better suited to continental football, and he can’t continue to live off his European achievements.

We have drawn 12 games in the league this season, which is ridiculous for a top four team. There were ‘poor’ draws in there, coming from behind against the likes of Spurs and Aston Villa, but if you take the games we should have won (even if it’s only a conservative half of the 12) we’re level with United having been spanked by them twice. We need someone running the show who can help see us through those sorts of games, and picks a squad to win the match (leaving Crouch out against the likes of Aston Villa…well, most teams really…was abismal management).

As for the second leg at Stamford Bridge, there’s no reason why we can’t go there and score two or three. We should have had at least that last night, and would have done but for Petr Cech’s heroics (from Gerrard and Torres, twice), and played well enough there in the league to say the tie isn’t over. No doubt Chelsea will try and defend and then hit us on the break, but Carvalho is weak and Terry showed yesterday just how scared of Torres he is…petty kicks whilst on the ground and all.

    Oh, and come on Barca!

Not sure what the odds are on Liverpool winning the Champions League, but now might be the time to back them.

I have my doubts about Chelsea when the heat is really on.

I wouldn’t begin to understand what that means so I’ll pass.

not a great game considering the stature of Barcelona and Man Utd but for me Man Utd will reach the final now and possibly meet Liverpool (just because of their pedigree in the tournament). could go to penalties at the Bridge.

I always feel that 0-0 away from home is not a great result at this stage of the competition when most of the teams by quarter-final stage have the capability to go anywhere and score at least one goal. I can see Barcelona getting an early goal in Old Trafford and going through with the final score 1-1.
