I wouldn’t be that put off by TNL’s run considering he was the one most inconvenienced by the slow gallop and I would strongly suggest that connections simply get a pacemaker for him for the future (not like JP couldn’t find one to do the job).
Yes he is primarily a 2m4f horse but many of those have dropped back in trip to win Champion Hurdles but they all required the race to be run at a proper end to end gallop (many also made their own running, which won’t work for him hence the pacemaker suggestion) and those conditions would give TNL the best chance to win but then it would also suit Lossiemouth as well.
March 10, 2026 at 18:49 #1758193“He still finished 3rd running much wider then the competition”.
Yes, Skelton was determined to give up the outside to no one!
Although not as bad and wide as the ride Gavin Sheehan gave an odds on favourite at Sedgefield today..
March 10, 2026 at 18:51 #1758194I was there LD73, forgot that they ran at level weights; just shows what a superb mare she was, to win a Gold Cup and then a few weeks later beat the 2-mile champion. Also a triple champion hurdler (Irish, British and French). Her achievemnets are scarcely believable, shame about her greedy owners
March 10, 2026 at 19:34 #1758209Impressive, better than Epatante or Honeysuckle, bit behind Annie Power.
March 10, 2026 at 19:53 #1758214She’s definitely better than Epatante but hasn’t done quite enough to match Honeysuckle for me yet.
Honeysuckle won 17 of her 19 races and never finished out of the frame in her 2 defeats which came in her final season when past her best.
She was literally never beaten in her prime.
She also won 3 Irish Champion Hurdles and 2 Cheltenham Champion Hurdles.Lossiemouth has failed to win an Irish Champion Hurdle on 2 occasions now.
She’s also been beaten on 4 occasions whereas Honeysuckle was unbeaten at the same age.Lossiemouth has probably had tougher 2m opposition but Honeysuckle could only beat what was around her.
March 10, 2026 at 20:28 #1758219She made it look like a walk in the park well done to her she deserved this added to her tall

March 10, 2026 at 20:33 #1758224I would hazzard a guess and say that Lossiemouth might never win an Irish Champion Hurdle as she doesn’t seem to show her best at Leopardstown, a course she has a record of 2 from 5 at.
Assuming State Man returns ok, it will be interesting to see how Willie places them next season, will she come over for the Fighting Fifth/Christmas/International Hurdles leaving State Man to stay at home for the Morgiana/December/Irish Champion Hurdles?
March 10, 2026 at 20:45 #1758233It was a decent run, but she’s better at 2m4f – but thankfully for her, her rivals are all better at that trip as well; I don’t think there is one decent pure 2 miler around at the moment (apart from you know who, and his injured stable mate).
The New Lion ran as I expected; he’s a staying 2 miler, who lacks real 2m speed. Might be better at Aintree over 2m4f……
March 10, 2026 at 21:53 #1758244Delighted she proved how good she is. State man i think is very underated and the mullins camp adamant he wasnt right when beaten by you know who. Lossiemouth a very good 2 miler but better probably at 2 and a half. I notice townend said he was glad the two stablemates didnt face each other so if both are fit and healthy next year back to will she wont she.
March 10, 2026 at 22:16 #1758248I’m a big State Man fan and agree that he’s been hugely underrated throughout his career. Every bit as good as Hurricane Fly imo.
That being said. There’s no way he beats Lossiemouth next season when pushing 10yo. He’ll have no chance against Brighterdaysahead around Leopardstown either if she stays hurdling.
Lossiemouth is Champion now and should be the yards No1 for the top races at home.

Based on what?

State Man will be 10 and have missed an entire season with a tendon injury. Don’t fancy his chances.
“She’s also been beaten on 4 occasions whereas Honeysuckle was unbeaten at the same age.”
Meh, Lossie was winning the Triumph at the age Honeysuckle was walking round a field and winning her first mares hurdle at the age Honeysuckle was dodging the festival entirely. They both won the champion hurdle on their first try at the same age but it was Lossie’s 10th grade one win, breaking the million pound career earnings barrier, vs Honey’s 7th. Different types of mares of course so that’s to be expected and it remains to be seen whether Lossie’s longevity matches Honeysuckle’s. It was right of de Bromhead to bring Honeysuckle along slowly of course. But I wouldn’t use Lossie’s smattering of 2s and an F against her in this regard.March 10, 2026 at 22:37 #1758255“Based on what?”
Which part?

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!March 10, 2026 at 23:09 #1758261Hurricane Flys longevity was fantastic but just based on ability in there primes, I think the pair would be neck and neck.
State Man’s performance in last year’s Champion Hurdle before falling was better than anything The Fly could ever muster up at the track.
Hurricane was also the apple of Willie’s eye. He’s always had his favourites and none more so than HF.
He protected the horse in his later years by continuously keeping his young stars away from him. The horse has a few more G1s than he should have due to this.
Un De Sceaux should’ve been in the Cheltenham and Punchestown Champion Hurdles in 2014 but Willie didn’t want any of his own to stand in the way of a possible 3rd Champion Hurdle.
Faugheen should’ve been winning all the main races in Ireland in 14/15 but again Willie kept him away.
That wasn’t fair to Ricci or Faugheen as he was clearly the better horse then so should’ve been in the top Irish G1s.Faugheen just before his injury in 2016 beats any version of Hurricane Fly imo.

For me this, yes.
However, State Man’s fall last year was not better than anything Fly could muster up, because you have no idea how far he’d have beaten a running on Golden Ace- he only beat her 4 3/4ls in Punchie. Hurricane Fly would’ve beaten Golden Ace 3 legged.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!March 10, 2026 at 23:32 #1758270Although we’ll never know for sure. She wouldn’t have made an inch on him up the hill imo.
He beat her easy at Punchestown also. Like Hurricane Fly, State Man has never been one for flashy long distance wins.Moscow Flyer never won by much either and nobody doubts his greatness.
“he only beat her 4 3/4ls in Punchie. Hurricane Fly would’ve beaten Golden Ace 3 legged.”
At the same age (8yo). Hurricane got beaten by both Rock on Ruby and Overturn.
State man would’ve beaten him at Cheltenham imo but it would be touch and go at Leopardstown/Punchestown.
Yes’ he’d have beaten Golden Ace easy in Ireland but only as far as he needed to.
