Unless my info is out of date, Jezki broke Istabraq’s track record by 3.5 seconds.
There seemed to be some debate over this yesterday after the race and also after the Supreme Novices. Jim McGrath and the other guy sitting behind the desk (can’t remember his name but think he has something to do with timeform) debated these "very fast times". Their take on it was that these should not be compared with previous race records, as their seemed to be a different method used to clock the time.
From what I gathered from them it was to do with previous times being started as soon as the tapes went up, it seems however that they may have had some change and it is now starting when they go past the the actual starting tapes or starter or whatever. I’m not sure, but it may be to do with the fact they seem to be keeping the horses back further from the tapes and raising them before they arrive at the tapes. Maybe they do this to try and cut down the number of false starts which have been a bit of a pain at some festivals and they don’t want to penalise the horses times by being further back at the start. On the other hand, it may have bugger all to do with this at all.
March 12, 2014 at 09:18 #471113I don’t think it’s a case of MTOY’s getting up the hill or sticking his neck out I think he uses up too much energy pulling himself around the track and still needs to learn to settle better he comes alive once the race starts, it’s a shame as he was so relaxed and calm when walking around the parade ring.

March 12, 2014 at 11:01 #471149Think TNO would’ve got there without the interference, let’s hope Our Conor is OK. Jezki did it well, MTOY didn’t find much, HF outpaced by younger legs.
Momentum is a key aspect of any race, particularly in a two mile championship race over hurdles.
The New One lost half a dozen lengths and had to build momentum again at a crucial stage. It’s not even a case of ‘would he? / wouldn’t he?’ – the answer is as clear as your reflection in a magic mirror.
The cold hard truth is that he would have won…’Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the true champion scuppered by a fall?’
I think you’ll find that your confusing cold hard truth with postulation
I agree he was a bit unlucky but he actually got himself outpaced at two latter stages of the race and his hurdling contributed to this. He was on the tail of the winner coming to three out and got left both there and as they took the sweep into the home straight. He could have and maybe should have stayed on and won but perpetual winners have many tales of narrow victories, unlucky competitors and the acts of god getting them home and losers seem to find the opposite.
I do believe that Twiston Davies clan are wrong when they talk about this horse having raw speed that has to be played last. He looks a strong stayer to me.

March 12, 2014 at 11:04 #471150It would be impossible to criticise Sam Twiston-Davies but I do wonder if he is thinking whether in hindsight he would have done anything differently.
After the interference he has basically ridden the horse to finish his race off and pick up what he could which turned out to be third. Unfortunately, once asked the horse has really finished up the hill and seemingly crossing the line still had plenty to offer. Had the jockey have gone for him earlier of course he might have just stopped well before the line but given the way he ran through the line he might have got very close.
Having said that I would not be too confident of him overturning the form purely because of his jumping. Even after the interference further sloppy jumping probably cost him another two lengths.
March 12, 2014 at 21:05 #471302In retrospect it wasn’t a good a race as it was hyped up to be. The absence of Annie Power and Un de Sceuax greatly reduced it; I bet Willie now regrets his attempts to get The Fly home. Our Conor’s tragic fall, The New One’s hindering, The Fly is clearly past his best, and there isn’t much between the first three, which suggests that none of them are superstars
March 12, 2014 at 21:21 #471310Did Mullins offer a reason why Un de Sceuax didn’t have a Festival entry? I cannot remember reading anything.

Forgot to post well done Jezki and backers. I put a line through him but he done it nicely.
