I was thinking a second season novice winning one of the other events might be more likely as the experience might help.
Perhaps a good point-to-pointer winning the National Hunt Chase on its debut under rules in the days of yore?
December 21, 2021 at 01:19 #1573570Possibly. I’ve failed. I thought of Soldatino, but I was almost certain he had a late prep and he had.

December 21, 2021 at 01:23 #1573571I don’t think there’s anything in the past 30 years or so.
Perhaps one of the usual suspects who are good at this kind of query will have an answer…
December 21, 2021 at 10:43 #1573600Omerta won the Kim Muir (Maguire/Pipe) in 1991 on his first start for more than a year.
And Fantus won the Foxhunters in 1995 on his first start under rules that season, although he had won two points at Larkhill in the weeks leading up to the Festival.
December 21, 2021 at 15:11 #1573645Shishkin in the 2022 Champion Chase might be another one.
December 21, 2021 at 15:33 #1573649Current list – Cyborgo, Penhill, Arctic Fire, Omerta. Not sure if Fantus should be included or not?

Quevega was also mentioned further up Tatling
December 21, 2021 at 15:51 #1573651I will belatedly include the dreaded ‘Mares Hurdle’ winner Quevega.

December 21, 2021 at 15:59 #1573653The dreaded Mares Hurdle, lacking in depth, is the most likely candidate. Did either Benie Des Dieux or Vroum Vroum Mag win on seasonal debut?
December 21, 2021 at 16:07 #1573654Vroum Vroum Mag was always fairly regularly ran. Benie De Dieux is close CAS, but fell at the last well in command on her seasonal debut in 2019.

December 21, 2021 at 16:19 #1573660That’s it. I knew one of them certainly appeared on their seasonal debut. I think Benie might have won that race at Gowran Park before winning at Cheltenham.
December 21, 2021 at 16:20 #1573661In 1947 the Festival was postponed until 12 April because of Arctic weather conditions from January through to March. In 1962/63 only one meeting was held between 26 December and 7 March for similar reasons. Both years might be fertile ground for a FTO Festival winner due to lack of opportunity beforehand.
December 21, 2021 at 16:23 #1573663Seasider comes up with the goods as per.
