The one I wanted to see in here, Geremia, gets an entry. Was hoping for bigger than 40’s, so I’ll hold off.

Still kick myself for missing Stratum in this four years back, and despite a relatively disappointing 2023, he’s still on the radar.

Dawn Rising, Tritonic, Cormier, and The Shunter all of interest too, but definitely waiting till market firms properly.

Geremia the main one right now though, just ahead of Stratum

Pied Piper (who I am backing for the Stayers hurdle the minute I see a price up) and MC Muldoon interest me most but no chances have been taken with the price of either so I’ll sit tight for now.

Wordsworth, ex Aidan O’Brien but now with David Pipe, is 50/1 with Hills but only as big as 25/1 elsewhere. Most firms are only 20/1.

I had to take the 50/1. He is a slow boat but is better than that price. He was good enough to be placed in the Irish Derby and he will stay.

Wordsworth’s reportedly going to be aimed at the race, it’s guaranteed a run, the trainer’s family has won the contest twice – CAS has surely identified an overpriced boat here.

The William Hill Organisation will only allow me £1 @ 50/1, but I require at least “nifty” compensation if CAS goes and wins a lifetime supply of Lanark Blue here, so it would be positively rude not to follow the great man in!

Worth pointing out that the 50s has GONE – 33/1 now.

Another ante-post charge by the TRF Massive Army, led by General CAS.

Ive always liked the Cesarewitch . In 89 I backed a big old maiden I followed a bit , big plodder . The Refrigerater , at 100s .Leader ran out first sight of running rail left him in front , he took the turn in and relentlessly galloped on , I started to believe ” it was coming home ” out of the dip he still led but inside final furlong like all good ew bets he finished 5th . Never won a race in end . I rode him along from the 2 pole on my couch , my Dad even gave the table a thumping to try help but not enough .

The price collapse must be due to Mr Davies’s £1 stake. ;-)

Don’t feel bad – Mike tipped Waterville for The Derby, though I’m sure a Quinnbet-minor-independent-esque cash out was involved shortly thereafter.

    The Grand Visir @ 55.0

Quite an eyecatcher at the end of today’s race. Obviously Coltrane never ran his race just now but still not a bad run off level weights. Another couple of strides and he would of finished third.

Looks like the second is into 5/1 now so you would imagine on 10 lb better terms in this he should be a fair bit closer next time if repeating that run.

I’m later to the party than a gamble late-night posting with this horse, but I organised backing Pied Piper for this at 8/1 win only at 8.32am with BetfairSportsBook on 2nd October, aka early yesterday morning – my friends love me!

The price is still available in places so I don’t feel I’m aftertiming in mentioning it.

The downsides: Pied Piper is best with cut in the ground, there wasn’t much in the way of that at Newmarket on Saturday and more dry weather is on the way. He didn’t pull up many trees on his most recent Flat outing either.

The upsides: Pied Piper has a fully-merited OR of 157 over hurdles, having been beaten a head off 154 in the County Hurdle in March. 96 on the Flat is a potentially very lenient mark on that. And he was beaten less than four lengths into sixth behind Coltrane in the Ascot Stakes off this mark last year, in a race where he didn’t get the clearest of runs. And that was on officially Good to Firm ground.

Conclusion: I can’t see much in the way of potential unexposed plots in the race this year, given Newmarket’s overall propensity to water, it’s unlikely to be faster ground two weeks’ hence than it was at Ascot last year, he’s fairly treated on his Flat form, positively thrown in on his hurdles form and he’d be a right knocking bet if it actually rained.

He’s the sort who could get sent off something daft like 7/2 if the above stars aligned.

He’s probably been withdrawn while I’ve been typing this epic – if so, that’s racing!
