The Observer reports today that Cattermole has lost his course commentary job at the festival. Hoiles and Johnson will do the honours.
February 22, 2009 at 15:53 #211716Not before time – he’s more QVC than RUK.
February 22, 2009 at 16:31 #211727That’s a bit strong Grass.
Mike is an above average commentator (imo) but may be Mark and Richard are better.

Value Is EverythingFebruary 22, 2009 at 17:28 #211744Any reason why?
I think he is a good commentator but much prefer the other two.
February 22, 2009 at 17:42 #211746Hopefully Aintree will follow suit after last years debacle, he is a very poor commentator although excellent at presenting at the likes of Ascot for ATR.

I like all racing comentators, very nice people.

I was talking to a commentator at Salisbury and mentioned Mike’s gaff in the National. He told me Mike was using a poor tv set which did not have a clear picture. Not that Mike would ever make excuses and was apparently quite embarassed about the mistake.

Value Is EverythingFebruary 23, 2009 at 00:14 #211797That is not true. There are three commentators for the Festival this year as for the last two years who rotate.
Myself, Mark and Mike.

Never believe everything you read in newspapers.

And you heard it straight from the horse’s mouth so to speak
(no offence!)February 23, 2009 at 00:37 #211805In "Khyber kims" defence, at least he re-edited the whole commentary
of that embarrassing race at Newbury before the night was out! to hear it now you wouldn"t know there was ever a "boo boo"! I also think that Mike
is an ideal frontman for TV, being a bit of a looker, in fact if Richard Hoiles had Mike Cattermoles looks the rest of us would never get a look in with the Ladies!!February 23, 2009 at 01:17 #211817It’s only because the vast majority of commentaries are spot on that a gaff stands out when it is made.
How many of us on here are faultless in the day job ?
Difference is for most of us our mistakes when we make them are out of the public gaze.
February 23, 2009 at 01:34 #211820It is not the vanity of the commentator that results in re-voicing when an error is made, it is at the request of ATR/RUK etc who want to make sure the copy they archive is correct in case used for future inserts/formguides etc.
February 23, 2009 at 01:49 #211825Richard, I thought that was the case.
Thanks for the info re Cheltenham. I have to say I thought it was always done on a rota.
Good to read you’ll be doing the honours at Festival.
February 23, 2009 at 05:36 #211878I must admit I am surprised that Catt is retained for such prestigous meetings after some major gaffs.
Like a good referee you don’t notice the good commentators throughout the action..and then they can add real excitement when a top race unfolds..
