Categories of Flat Races

Please could someone help either with their knowledge or point me in the right direction of some sites to help with my problem.

I am quite new to racing but I find the different types of races bewildering.

I know races are graded group races listed etc, but then there are median auction maidens,claimers and sellers. Are these handicaps or level weights( wt for age allowance, sex etc). And of course the handicaps.

Is there somewhere ( or someone?)out there with the definitive answer I am looking for.

I often here in the form books "he’s been running in sellers or claimers so now he/she been upped in class" etc or been running in handicaps, so should go well.

I hope I’ve made myself clear. Any advice would be welcome!
