I recorded the last half dozen BC races from ATR, and watched them early this morning.
I know little about UK/US flat racing, but I watched it, was engaged by it and thoroughly enjoyed the NBC coverage.
For a broadcast seeking to engage the general TV viewer it seemed infinitely superior to anything the UK offers. I did have a little think about why I should feel that way because it was undoubtedly schmaltzy. For me I think it paid far less attention to the betting, and more attention to the horse story, albeit often through the people involved.
Didn’t think I’d enjoy it, but did.
November 2, 2014 at 18:18 #494343Waste of time really. Don’t like US racing either and when a horse that gets beat in a class 4 Leicester maiden at 66/1 on itsd debut then beaten in a class 6 at Kempton almost lifts the top prize well that says it all.
November 2, 2014 at 20:04 #494352Not the best breeders cup this year. Most trainers think of it as an add on to the European season which is a pity as there are good races to win and great profile for possible stallions. The likes of Australia would have been perfect for the 12f turf race and any of the first three in the moyglare would have won the fillies race. There is only so many top class horses to go round and the arc weekend and champions day in Ireland and England leave very few top horses to go to the bc. Horses like s n abbey made their name there but the travelling and it being at the end of a long season means it’s unlikely the best of Europe will go to the breeders cup
November 2, 2014 at 21:43 #494363t’s an unanswerable question really.
It’s a complete irrelevance to me, but could be the highlight of the year for others.
Mike
I think this is probably spot on
whats all the fuss about …if you like it ,,great , if you dont …as Phil said , turn over the channel
Corm , looks like a lot of folks bit your little dangler !!!
November 2, 2014 at 22:56 #494366I almost hate the Breeders Cup. I don’t like all the American razzmatazz b******t, I don’t like dirt racing and I don’t like the fact that it is built up as a world championship. World championship with the likes of Caspar Netscher and Toast Of New York running – do me a favour – and one of them nearly won.
It’s crap basically and i’d rather throw my money down the drain than have a bet on any race. One final point – ATR’s coverage – absolutely abysmal. No British studio analysis, nothing, just Nick Luck looking the odd one out surrounded by the Yanks. There was no preview programme either
Breeders Cup, Dubai World Cup – all a load of tosh that in reality 99% of Brits really couldn’t give a flying fig about.Strange that someone who almost hates it, thinks it’s crap and a load of tosh then complains that there was no preview programme (which there was)and that the coverage was abysmal. You clearly had enough interest to watch it then.
To answer your points.
1 Toast Of New York is a top notch horse off the turf – Maybe, but as already stated I don’t like dirt racing so that means little to me. Even then in this "World Championship" of horse racing is he really the second best dirt horse in the world over ten furlongs? He may be but that then says a lot about the quality of dirt racing.
2 ATR sent Matt Chapman out there – Erm yes. They had the rights but they hardly treated the event like a "World Championships" given there was no huge build up, no studio programme. TV stations send more people to cover an away England international football match than ATR sent to the Breeders Cup.
3 Most Americans couldn’t give a fig about our racing – Perfectly fine, that’s up to them. I don’t see you rather childishly accusing them of "xenophobia" though. It is not a crime for Brits to prefer British racing. Everything doesn’t have to be embraced because it’s foreign.
4 I watched it and complained about the coverage – I said the coverage was abysmal but I also said I don’t blame ATR for the coverage. That isn’t a complaint its an opinion. I work nights so being Saturday I’m awake all night with very little to do so I recorded the Breeders Cup and watched the races. I fast forwarded about 95% of the show. Had there been decent boxing on this Saturday I probably wouldn’t have watched it at all.
November 7, 2014 at 05:33 #494668I really enjoyed the BC Classic.A wonderful race from start to finish. The highlight of the evening.
November 7, 2014 at 13:06 #494695I fell asleep, and missed it. Not the happiest to hear flintshire got beat by a lasixed gelding. I like the meeting myself, because i like the occasion. Not a fan of the fairytale stories all the time, or the american tendency to include sponsors products during presentation. I have enjoyed watching some good races involving zenyatta, midday, goldikova and mucho macho man etc. I don’t mind the surface or tracks, because that’s their way of doing things. I’ll catch up with what i missed.
November 7, 2014 at 13:24 #494697I’ve grown to like it but until the Europeans plan it better success will be patchy. Would have thought that trainers whose horses needed fast ground would be well suited to sending their horses to the bcup. St nicks abbeys win is my fav race although I have fond memories of the likes of ouija board and pebbles from a few years back. The classic the last two years have been great races and both toast of New York and declaration of war greatly enhanced their reputation even though they got beat.
