I saw somewhere that New Approach was quoted at a miserly, nay ludicrous 12/1 to win the Triple Crown.
Could some clever soul enlighten me as to the last horse to actually contest the 2000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger in the same season?
I have scanned the Leger results back to 1990 – the memory doesnt go back much further – and couldn’t find any likely types.
Any help would be appreciated!

October 22, 2007 at 21:13 #1209631987 Reference Point won the Derby and St Ledger, don’t know if he ran in the 2000 Guineas though?
Apparently he’s also the last Derby winner to run in the St Ledger.

Can’t find a colt yet!
October 22, 2007 at 21:20 #120966Sholokov ran in the 2000 Guineas at NMK, then the Irish Derby at CUR, then the St Leger at DON in 2002!

Missed a 0 off surely
October 22, 2007 at 23:11 #120975Giacometti?
October 22, 2007 at 23:16 #120976Just discovered that that was 1974 (how time flies!).
I think he was placed in all 3 races.
May have been others since.

The last one I can think of, off the top of my head, was Charles St George’s Lanfranco, trained by Henry Cecil, in 1985. He was mid-division in the Guineas, fifth (I think) in the Derby and a close third to Oh So Sharp at Doncaster.
October 23, 2007 at 08:40 #120987Good call, yquem21.
Same owner as Giacometti, I believe.
October 23, 2007 at 08:47 #120988I remember Lanfranco well ~ big, big white face; the bookies probably made him about 12/1 to win the triple crown after his Futurity win!

I believe so, although Giacometti was a little before my time.

Oh So Sharp (of course) won the Fillies Triple Crown in 1985.
1000, Oaks, St Leger. Very close 2nd in King George too.
October 23, 2007 at 16:01 #121068Nijinsky, 1970 and before that none, I think, since Bahram 1935.
