Wise words Slewman. The Jockey Club Gold Cup was run over 2 miles up until 1975. In 1960 the great Kelso broke the 3m 20s barrier in winning the first of his five victories in the race. Prior to that Triple Crown winners Gallant Fox, War Admiral, Whirlaway and the legendary Citation all added the 2m marathon to their CVs.
In RUKs excellent coverage last night James Willoughby reiterated the oft made point that the reliance on race day medication in the USA has led to a weakening of the breed hence the average times declining (whereas in Europe they have increased).
Having said all that Chrome did look to be about to make a race winning move up the home straight but did not seem to have the requisite stamina reserves – pure and simple. Espinoza came in for some criticism but I thought that was misplaced. He had a perfect run through on the rail and was in the ideal position to strike in the home stretch only for the response to be minimal.
I am sure Chrome will bounce back and shouldn’t be written off.

Espinoza might not have done anything wrong in positioning, but after watching yet another thrashing of a horse in the straight… Am glad he did not win.
Bad sportsmanship by owners afterwards too.
California Chrome might "bounce back" Ivanjica, but there is also a possibility the horse might remember the whip abuse.
Value Is EverythingJune 10, 2014 at 00:14 #481852Ladies and gentlemen, once again we see a horse who cannot win at 2400m. Miss Woodford, as much as I don’t want to say it. But US racing has taken a downward spiral over the last 30 years due to the fact that the breed is not tough enough to run a mile and a half. The winner of the Belmont Gold Cup over two miles on Friday ran the amazing time of 3min 26 sec. The record in Australia’s Melbourne Cup is 3min 15sec for two miles. What I’m trying to say is breeders breed speed not stamina. California Chrome couldn’t run 2400m down a well. Sad really, just like Sunday Silence, Alysheba, War Emblem and Smarty Jones. Horses like Citation and Affirmed came from strong staying pedigrees. Those days are gone.

For the record Charming Kitten won the Belmont Gold Cup in 3:21 1/5, just one second off the course record (which was set back in 1983 by King’s General). The turf had been rained on the night before so it wasn’t lightning fast, either. Incidentally, Charming Kitten ran in last year’s Kentucky Derby. He finished 9th.
I don’t think the breed itself has changed as much as you say. It is the training that is the difference. And training flat horses has changed quite a bit over the years.
http://www.paulickreport.com/news/ray-s … e-changed/Most American jumps horses are ex-flat horses with the same pedigrees as their "not tough enough to run a mile and a half" brethren. They are trained to run long distances, and most prove capable of doing so. The Kentucky Derby also-ran Mr. Hot Stuff went on to win a G1 hurdle race at 2 1/16 miles, for example. The jumping aspect has tripped up more prospective steeplechasers over here than the distance.
June 10, 2014 at 06:35 #481859What an effing idiot the owner is. Because the winner chose not to run in the previous 2 legs the obnoxious knob says the winners connections are cheats because his horse went around in the first 2 legs. Well guess what d#ckhead, they were smart and kept their horse fresh while you were greedy and going for glory…I know over here for comments like that there would be a large fine and possibly harsh disciplinary action taken.

You Aussies are a strange bunch. "Disciplinary action? Taking it a bit too far Jollyp. Your Cricket officials don’t think too badly about using casual racism to try and put the opponent off just before the Test starts. Yet Racing Authorities give out large fines and disciplinary action for this.
Only his opinion, daft one granted. Spur of the moment comment, not well thought out, one he’ll regret. Lady behind tried to intervene and stop him but to no avail. They’re no more "greedy", going for a historic Triple Crown than the winners are "cowards".

The racing powers have absolutely no control over cricket
That is a weird statement GT, has absolutely nothing to do with this or racing
He called them cheats…in a court of law he would lose a defamation case every day of the week!!! If a licenced person here called another a cheat with no basis they would be disciplined and fined, common sense! So are you actually saying the winners are "cowards" GT ??? A person with half a brain would realise that the winner was suited to the distance, their own F#@king business which races they choose to run in. If you are calling them cowards you are a disgrace! Was Henry Cecil a "coward" for not running Frankel in the Derby ??? No he chose not to for a reason, exactly the same thing here you one eyed small minded person.June 10, 2014 at 08:54 #481875The owner has since said sorry for his comments.

Read my post again Jollyp.
You called connections of CC "greedy", going for the Triple Crown. I am saying they were "no more greedy… than the winners are cowards". ie Nobody is greedy and nobody are cowards. If you think it would stand up in a court of law, then you must be living in a strange country.

At least we can agree it was a daft thing to say.

June 10, 2014 at 12:13 #481899Nathan calling someone a cheat without basis or evidence is called defamation…You lose in court, it is just common sense
It’s a bit different as they know their target.Say for instance if one is on a forum and faceless and they said something like Black Caviar was on steroids or inferred it, that is saying that they were "cheats".That happened a bit on here, then when the English steroid drama hit all those people went quiet and lost their balls….June 10, 2014 at 12:19 #481900Are you that gullible GT…It is called defamation! It wont only stand up in court but will succeed.Live in a strange country…I would have thought it was the other way around….We don’t get dictated too by an ethnic minority…No dancing, no ham, no Christmas celebrations, we are fine here mate; but I truly fear for you…

Don’t know where you get those thoughts from; ah well, may be I do. Mr Sky by any chance?

Wish you’re right Jollyp! If you can get a lot of money for defamation from someone calling you a "cheat". How much can I get from The-Ante-Post-King for calling me a "liar, fake, cheat and charlatan"?
Value Is EverythingJune 10, 2014 at 19:02 #481926If calling someone a cheater is grounds for a defamation lawsuit than everyone on this forum is liable to be sued by Godolphin.

Godolphin could team up with Aiden O’Brien for a class action…
