8pm tonight on C5 a program about Great Western railway and how the station manager at Cheltenham Spa copes with the 60,000 racing fans arriving for the Cheltenham Festival.
I watched it and found it a bit shocking to be honest…I now drive to course each day but fifteen years ago I always went by train and never saw drunken yobs like was shown on c5, now either I was lucky and missed them or the behaviour of "casual racegoers" has plummeted in recent times.
One things for sure, anyone planning for the first time to go the festival by train will be thinking twice after watching this programme
Seems this is the way it is for all major sports events etc, why would anyone want to go to Cheltenham and get so drunk they can’t remember a thing about the day ?
Even the same at Glorious Goodwood this year. Women mostly. Start the day turned out like models and by 3pm they’re walking like Dick Emery in their high-heels and chucking up into designer hats. We always go by train as we enjoy a drink at the races but we’d have to start pretty early to get into that sort of state.
