Does anyone have any links to websites or simply some information on where I can find details of Bula’s career.
Races run in and won, jockey’s etc.
Many thanks in advance.January 23, 2010 at 22:57 #271734Don’t know any websites about where you can get information on Bula.
However, I can tell you some basic info for starters.
Bay Gelding trained by Fred Winter – by Raincheck out of Pongo’s Fancy.
Jumps career – Ran 51 times and won 34 of those. Paul Kelleway, John Francome and Richard Pitman all rode him at one time or another.
2 Champion hurdles, Benson & Hedges hurdle, Welsh Champion hurdle and Gainsborough Chase were among his many big race wins. Also won his first 13 races over hurdles.

In his prime he was the fastest finisher over hurdles you ever saw. I couldn’t tell you which one of his many wins it was but I’m pretty sure it was a Cheltenham trial.. Paul Kellaway had held him up as usual and he must have still been 6 lengths behind 5 or 6 horses after jumping the last and a win looked impossible….PK gave him a slap his tail swished round and he took off like a rocket and won by about 3 lengths.
If it wasn’t for him Persian War would have won 4 Champion Hurdles. I was PW’s biggest fan and had pics all over my wall of him when I was a kid but maintain Bula was the better of the two and maybe the best of all time.
I say maybe because anyone who saw the way Golden Cygnet was cruising up to Night Nurse Sea Pigeon and Bird’s Nest in the Scottish Champion Hurdle when he fell 2 out and was fatally injured, know he must have been one helluva horse.
Bula BTW also finished 3rd to Ten Up and Soothsayar in the Gold Cup.
January 24, 2010 at 10:27 #271773Thank you gents, thats really useful.
Specifically I was looking for his full campaign in the two seasons he won the Champion Hurdle….’71 and’72.
Races ran in and his placings?
Thanks if anyone can help.January 24, 2010 at 10:46 #271775Shabby
If I recall correctly…it is a (very) long time ago…he won at 50-1 on his debut???

The ARKLE of hurdling without any doubt outstaning in "The Golden Years" of hurdlers
January 24, 2010 at 11:05 #271779Of the hurdle races Bula competed in, he won 21 out of 26.
