‘BRITISH GREYHOUND RACING SPECIAL’ on ‘WILSON SAYS’ on RIVERSIDERADIO.COM, SUNDAY, 18th AUGUST at 3 pm
British greyhound racing is attended by millions, the sixth most watched sport, and generates 2.5bn a year turnover for bookmakers; but it faces inadequate funding, welfare issues, increasing track closures and growing calls for the sport to be banned.
Presenter Iain Wilson visited the Greyhound Board of Great Britain’s (GBGB) London headquarters and Nottingham Greyhound Stadium, for the Derby semi-final, to find out how greyhound racing is fighting back.
ON THE SHOW
GBGB Managing Director, Mark Bird, discusses funding controversy, welfare and integrity, ending the economic euthanasia of greyhounds, Belle Vue stadium’s future and the Greyhound Board’s 5-year strategy for the industry.
Rachel Corden, Nottingham Greyhound Stadium Manager, gives the inside story on hosting their first English Derby, remembering her late father on final night, and why everyone should own a retired greyhound!
GBGB Senior Stipendiary Steward, Paul Illingworth, explains his role at the Greyhound Board and the sea change in greyhound welfare and injury and retirement data.
Anneliese Thompson, the rising star of UK greyhound training, talks breeding, schooling, getting the best out of the dogs on the track; the cost of ownership and the inspiration of working with her father.
Derby sponsors’ representatives, Lofty from Star Sports and Richard Evans of Local Parking Security Ltd give their thoughts on co-sponsoring the holy grail of greyhound racing.

October 10, 2019 at 11:47 #1465509Sorry Zip,
I totally forgot to get back to you.
I spent far too much of my youth at “Wishaw Dogs” than would be advisable, as it was only 5 mins away from my house, but since it closed, bar a couple of Work Nights Out at Shawfield, I’ve drifted away from the sport completely.
With that in mind, I’m not very knowledgeable, and if the guys were talking nonsense I wouldn’t know, but in my opinion the guys talking were excellent.
The show seemed very slick to me, and for someone who’s not got that knowledge, they kept me listening right to the end.
Was honestly a very good listen.
