“Insallah!!! That’s the finest version of the Lords Prayer I’ve ever encountered Ian.”

Thank you – the Ben/Ian religious cult of “Double Every Winner With Flightline” has come to an end, but it was epic while it lasted.

We made enough to feed the 5,000 – and can now just spend it on ourselves.

    Amen!

I knew nothing about him before last night.

Just at the point when he could go and helped the sport, he retires. Horseracing is just going to be a sport played and watched only by a few very rich individuals. Im sure he had amazing ability but he is no great to me.

Surely he can be only compared to other dirt greats?? I imagine Frankel would struggle on dirt and vice verse here. Feels like a different sport.

Also the English horses greatest achievement wasn’t that Ascot race with all things in his favour. It was that last race where all conditions were in his opponents favour. Thats what we should look for in the great champions imo.

Not someone I quote often but I think Alice Plunkett got it right on this subject.

When castigated for saying Winx was her idea of the greatest Flat horse ever and Cue Card over Jumps she replied abruptly: “I’m not interested in ratings. They might be your criteria, but they’re not mine and I’m entitled to any criteria I like. I value durability, soundness, longevity, consistency and the sheer ability to win a lot of races.”

    I’ve no argument with that.

It’s not what I value most, but others are entitled to their own criteria.

In true Ben style I’ve got one remaining Flightline multiple running – Rose Of Arcadia the day she hacked up at Chepstow, Flightline and Constitution Hill for the Champion Hurdle.

    The religion lives on!

In human sport, we obviously look for consistency and longevity so why not with our equine heros?
    .
If Tiger Woods was imperious for two years, we wouldn’t say the same things about him as we do now. Likewise Federer was no better a player at the end of his career than he was at the start. If he had retired after 10 grand slams, would we hold him where we do now?

Baeed probably dented his reputation in the very last race because we saw for all his talent, his limitation. Too many horses, like boxers try very hard to stay away from that line for fear of doing themselves financial damage.

    And just another point,

the next truly great US dirt horse wont be compared to Flightline, he will again be compared to Secretariat. In the same way that Flightline should really be compared with Ghostzapper first, a horse he shares similarities with.

For those few weeks my life felt like it had a purpose, I might actually have to start being productive again and do my uni assignments now, heaven forbid.

That is tremendous, a winning bet involving Flightline and Constitution Hill – I’d argue that’s the “greatest” bet ever created ;-)

If I could combine studying race cards in the Coventry Evening Telegraph with somehow getting a Law degree at Warwick uni, you can multitask too, Ben!

Two seasons, 6 races unbeaten, and a few great performances does not warrant an all time great. He could have been, but they’ve decided against it. Too small a sample size, and I’m sorry but that does matter.

No need to apologise, Andy, you don’t have to agree with those like me who think he’s an all-time great.

But we don’t have to agree with you either – game of opinions.

He certainly brought a number of us a lot of joy in the time he was around.

Great ability vs great achievement is what im seeing.

The one thing we can probably agree on is that he could have transcended the sport.

Horseracing industry will eat itself in time as the future rich kids will buy football teams instead.

I wouldnt be surprised if one day i find myself looking back at this era with a mixture of sadness and disdain

    Ian,

How would you rate Flightline’s performance based on your rating system?
