Having problems thinking of a name for grandson number two. Wondered if there was a name that anyone wishes they’d been called or a name that they would find terribly embarrassing.

When my parents were courting they read a book called DAPHNIS AND CHLOE a story about 2 lovers[sort of ancient greek romeo and juliet] and decided they would name their first born after one of the characters, just so glad i was a girl .

    Hi Chloe,

We called our daughter Chloe Beth. That was 33 years ago and the name was little used. Chloe green and summery.

Shock horror it jumped to no.1 in no time.

Our son is John. We like names that cannot be shortened.

Boys names – George is good and strong and traditional.

Let us know what you choose.

    :D :D

    Solid traditional names it is

George, Stephen, Henry, John, William, Edward, Albert, Stanley, Arthur, Ernest, Sidney, Patrick…

A young couple I know have named their first-born Emmanuel which along with other neo-biblical names such as the fashionable Josh(ua) I don’t care for much

And whatever you do don’t name the boy after a footballer

One Wayne was enough and his first name was John :)

Being the morbid type I make a beeline for Wikipedia’s ‘Recent Deaths’ column most mornings and who do I find today

A 112yo shuffled off named Nyleptha

What a grand name. Should you be blessed with a new grand-daughter Moe…?

I’ve always been happy with my name and can’t imagine being anything other. But, I well remember being completely stuck trying to choose a boys name when ‘we’ was expecting.

Thankfully we had a girl and both knew what we wanted to call her. Again from memory if she had been a boy I think the choice was between Patrick and Alexander.

Having had a long chat with someone selling me insurance the other day, I’ve realised that a boy is very much defined by their name [this is what I thought]. Much as I would love him to be called Syd [after Syd Barrett] that is never going to happen. So it looks like the totally safe option, which is Ben. You can’t mess around with Ben. Safe and a bit boring with no football or soap connections.

In general, all boys’ names are boring. The only vaguely acceptable one that I can think of at the moment is Spider.

Hopefully the kids when he goes to nursery won’t remember Crossroads, and those of us that do are well on the way to not having a memory. [When you think about it, Crossroads was way ahead of it’s time..us Brummies are so ground breaking…]. I take comfort in the fact that Zowie Bowie only became successfull when he changed his name to Duncan.Spider not good in a household where everyone suffers from arachnophobia [not me, I hasten to add..got one crawling up the wall as I sit here…what does scare me, though, is the thought that, if I saw an episode of Crossroads now, Meg Richardson would look really young].

Phil Mitchell’s son is called Ben in Eastenders. You know – the annoying wussy kid with the glasses.

This thread just reminded me of a joke I heard earlier from Michael Macintyre on Live at the Apollo on BBC1.

He was on about the football manager Alan Knill and an appropriate name for him to call a son…

Juan….obviously making Juan Knill! Made me laugh anyway.

I just got a plain and simple name…John. Can’t say I dislike it and just glad my parents didn’t go with a name they told me they strongly considered…Luke. It would have been harsh with my surname being Sharp!

The football theme played a huge part in the naming of our only child. I am a big Leeds fan and picked two popular players at the time who’s names I thought would be nice for our first born. A boy would have been called Harry (a name I really like for a boy) after then Leeds player Harry Kewell. And a girl which we have… got the name Olivia from Olivier Dacourt, the nearest I could get to naming a girl after a footballer!

Also on the football theme, one of my nephews was named after a footballer. His Mum and Dad were watching an England game and both decided before the game that whoever scored the first goal, they would name their lad after. The goalscorer was Michael Owen so they cheated and went with Owen. Think they were just happy that Emile Heskey drew his usual blank.

Then of course, you’ve got the spoonerism [?] problem eg Shiloh Pitt to watch out for.
