Two graded handicaps at Leopardstown next weekend which are sure to be popular betting heats. A few horses stand out for me, one in the chase and two in the hurdle.
Starting with the chase, Talbot Road looks the obvious horse to me. He ran very well behind Bright New Dawn and Djakadam two runs ago before ruining his chance last time by jumping markedly out to his left at Fairyhouse. That shouldn’t be an issue back at Leopardstown and I’d forgive him his last run. He was just beaten in a handicap hurdle on the same Leopardstown card last year and Arthur Moore is one to keep on the right side of in these handicaps at the Dublin track. He’s 12/1 with Boylesports and it wouldn’t surprise me if he went off a well backed favourite.
Moving on to the hurdle, and it’s novices Gilgamboa and The Game Changer which catch the eye. Gilgamboa was a good winner of a handicap recently and has been put in here at 12/1. However, he meets The Game Changer on identical terms which saw Charlie Swan’s horse comfortably win at Punchestown last month. The Game Changer is available at 25/1 and while I don’t think there’ll be a whole lot between them, he just shouldn’t be twice the price of a horse he stuffed two runs ago.
I’ve backed both and had a sneaky e/w double as well!

The Game Changer is definitely the main hope for me in the hurdle, and I’ve went for the 16’s NRNB, and took a bit of the 25’s as well, think that’s a great price.
Not had a proper chance to look at it, but
Quick Jack
obviously looks rock solid, and he’s as low as 3’s now.
Like the look of
Snake Eyes
too, I’m sure the plan will be to run well here, and get his mark up, just in time for Cheltenham, really think he’ll figure.
Il Fenomeno
wasn’t far way in this last year, and he’ll be running off the same mark, very interesting at 25’s.
I think that
City Slicker
has been a bit overlooked. Available at 18’s, probably on the basis of being top weight, his mark took a jump after his last win. He ran no sort of race in The Ladbroke, but then he wasn’t the only one. That race aside, he’s not ran a bad race, and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that this mark won’t stop him, certainly based on what I’ve seen of him. I think he’s a real player, along with his stablemate, the more obvious
Blood Cotil
.
Old
Sailors Warn
, has a long absence to overcome, but he has dropped a few pounds during his hiatus, and could easily sneak a place off the back of some of his old form. 25’s looks no bad for a place.
I’ll stick by The Game Changer for now, but I’ll probably have a go on one of the others too.
In the Chase, as you say, Talbot Road does look very good, and he looks to have a lot going for him.
Of the opposition,
Canaly
ran well for a long way in The Paddy Power, and this step back in trip looks ideal for him, and he looks areal player at 20’s.
Daring Article
, and
Hunting Party
were both fallers in that race, so difficult to know how they’d have fared. I think Hunting Party has a future, but difficult to get involved just now, with him also holding an entry in The Thyestes on Thursday. Daring Article looked very progressive before his mishap, and looks a serious danger to all. Still available at 12’s, that seems very fair. Was well backed in the lead up to The Paddy Power.
Undertheboardwalk
also took in that race, and certainly didn’t disgrace himself. I think Tony Martin is plotting him up for something, and I’ve got The Irish National in the back of my mind for him, though if Saturday was to be the day, then he won’t be the 20’s he is now, at "the off".
I thought before The Paddy Power that
Glam Gerry
was starting to look like a well handicapped horse, and still feel the same, with him having skipped that race. Not seen since down the field in a hurdle race in December, I think he could pe poised to run a big race here, certainly would be ideal for securing a nice mark for Cheltenham, where he ran a blinder to be 3rd to Salut Flo in the 2012 Byrne Plate. He’s 4lbs below that mark at the moment. He’s another who looks fairly priced, with 22’s available. He runs in the same ownership as the well fancied, and much touted
Minsk
. He continues to flatter to deceive, but he is going to pop one of these days, and based on his lofty reputation you could say he doesn’t look harshly treated, but I’ll be leaving him for now, as he has had a few chances. Well fancied though, and getting backed.
Operating
is continuing to come along nicely. Been running well behind some very nice horses recently, and at 18’s, there’s a good chance that Saturday is the day he finally gets the win he deserves. I like to follow Jessica Harrington horses, and always keep an eye on any entries for owner Michael Buckley. An interesting combination, and could really see this one getting backed.
Finally,
Prince De Beauchene
. He’s been running poorly in lofty company of late, but I just get the impression they’re being careful with him, and he’s now 6lbs lower than he was less than a year ago. I think he’s way better than what he’s been showing recently, and suspect he might just be
very
well handicapped. The obvious target would be The Grand National, but given his record of staying sound long enough to make it there, they might just want to strike while the irons hot, and, wouldn’t surprise me if he just went and landed this off top weight. He is, though, another with an entry in The Thyestes. He’s 25’s for both races.
I was going to follow you in last night THM, for the The Game Changer/Talbot Road double but didn’t want to crab your double bet, so I stuck the 2 of them on a Mug 15 with a couple of others.
I’ll stick by The Game Changer as the main hope for The Boylesports, but as for The Chase, I’m having trouble to sticking to just the one. For your peace of mind, I’ll probably plump for one of the others.

Excellent write up again. The thing about the hurdle race is nobody knows how much the Martin and Byrnes horses may have up their sleeves The Game Changer has been campaigned openly but with his racing style he’s never going to win by 10 lengths so imo is ahead of the handicapper. Whether he’s well in enough in comparison to a couple of the others is the question. I think City Slicker may have to go right handed, has never won left handed. Blood Cotil very interesting indeed, rated 141 and got to within two lengths of 152 rated Diakali at Punchestown last year. Snake Eyes is another I’ve had an eye on. I thought he could be a grade one horse after his run in a Fairyhouse bumper in 2012, but he’s obviously had problems since. I remember telling a few friends to get on Sailors Warn at Newbury a couple of years ago when he was available at 50/1, ended up beaten just 5 lengths and didn’t even get a place! All things considered though The Game Changer looks a huge price at 25/1.
Happy to see Talbot Road cut to 8/1 today, always a positive when Arthur Moore’s are supported in these races imo. I don’t think the chase is as competitive as the hurdle and reckon Talbot Road should be clear fav.
January 24, 2014 at 16:19 #465768QUICK JACK and CANALY my bets in both races
January 25, 2014 at 00:18 #465862As mentioned, The Game Changer 16/1 is extremely appealing at the price, each way 5 places with Paddy. I can’t see past Quick Jack for the win though.
