It is a joke, although not exactly an example of sparkling wit.
And I do think Hislop has an issue with Johnson because he knows he helped to put him there, which helps explain it.
“Private Eye” could do with a new editor. Hislop has been there for almost 40 years now.
May 28, 2022 at 10:32 #1599547It’s a spoof. Here’s the actual cover:
May 28, 2022 at 10:40 #1599552Who is the ‘London media class’? The Mail, Express, Telegraph, Sun are all fairly devoted to Johnson and if they aren’t part of the ‘London media class’ then who is?
They are just as incapable of looking beyond party loyalty as anyone else. It was all ‘Labour’s magic money tree’ during the election campaign, ‘they’ll bankrupt the country’ but when the Tories do it it’s ‘Boris and Rishi save the world’. Barely a peep from them about the endless billions lost to fraud but if Labour had done that we’d never hear the end of it.
For what it’s worth I don’t think the whole covid response would have been much better under Labour but I don’t see that it would have been much worse either.
May 28, 2022 at 10:41 #1599553I know drone. But I wasn’t going to say
I love it.
May 28, 2022 at 10:43 #1599554Never been a fan of Hislop, tbh.
Not half as funny as he thinks he is in my book and his whole patronising, condescending, assumption/delusion on HIGNFY back in the day that he was the man to explain what the week’s events really mean to a rapt audience hanging on his every word got right up my nose tbh.
Conceited little tool.

May 28, 2022 at 11:03 #1599557There are some seemingly decent Conservative MP’s and I usually email them if I think they have behaved honourably about something eg Tugendhat, Bottomley, Bell etc. Having said that if you then look at their voting record they’re still pretty awful when it comes to caring for the poorest members of society.
May 28, 2022 at 11:10 #1599559Agree about Hislop, ID. I used to quite like him but he reminds me a bit of Harold Wilson’s put down of Tony Benn: “He immatured with age”.
If he thinks he is so clever, why not run for public office himself instead of sneering from the sidelines? Which is really what he has done all of his life. University and straight into “Private Eye” where he became Richard Ingrams’s pet and then appointed as his successor.
The old guard at the Eye were furious, although that is quite amusing in itself. It explains why the Eye was full of attacks on the likes of Peter McKay and Nigel Dempster for years afterwards because they tried to block Hislop’s appointment.
May 28, 2022 at 11:18 #1599560Clive “Agree with both Richard’s posts here. Wales and Scotland had hefty Tory and leave votes.
It’s a FACT. That’s what numbers are”
—————————————————
Best to know your “facts” before your declare them as such2019 General Election
SNP 48 seats (up 13)
Conservatives 6 seats (down 7)
Labour 1 seat (down 6)
Lib Dems 4 seats (n0 change)

Do you have a problem with counting
Please post the total number of leave votes In Scotland and wales. And then the total number of Tory votes and tell me they are not significant
It’s in response to the ever boring sweeping statements about “the English” that would have you and that other anglophobic poster squealing like stuck pigs if targeted at your nations
May 28, 2022 at 11:37 #1599563I’m mixed on private eye. Too much sneering at times like too many so called comedians
Richard Ingram’s always struck me as a very nasty snobbish elitist piece of work
But it still uncovers stories the press won’t touch and is essential for that
May 28, 2022 at 13:38 #1599590I hadn’t read Private Eye for years until I picked one up on one of my hospital visits. Didn’t find much of interest in it and the type face is hard work for my eyes now.

I have no problem with my counting thank you Clive, whereas you appear to have a poor
grasp of what facts actually mean. Scotland had 6 votes for the Tories, down from 13. Do you
think this represents “significant” votes for the tories from Scotland. If Wales had
18 and Scotland had 2, would you say that Scotland and Wales played their part in puting
this Tory Party in Power with a cumulative 20 seats? Don’t manipulate “facts” to try and
make a point which doesn’t exist.Comment on Wales 14 seats if you think it is “significant”, but don’t try and say that 6
seats, a reduction of 7, had anything to do with this Tory Government being elected. Heaven
forbid !May 28, 2022 at 13:48 #1599595Incidently I have never made an Anglophobic comment on any forum
on this site. Again, a manipulation of the truth to try and make
a point that doesn’t exist.May 28, 2022 at 14:40 #1599599So the PM has removed integrity, objectivity, accountability, transparency, honesty, and ‘to lead in the public interest’ from the ministerial code. Why can that possibly be (goes away scratching head….)?
May 28, 2022 at 14:53 #1599601I’m not saying you are bigg but there’s a bit of English this English that sweeping statements across a couple of threads now. Should be nailed and dropped

May 28, 2022 at 15:55 #1599606I don’t agree with independence but if I hear a good speech in parliament it usually turns out that it’s been given by someone from the SNP. Joanna Cherry is very good.
