I know they get a lot of stick, but some of them are quite reasonable to some punters. Today i logged into Hills, and noticed a message. If i bet 50 quid on the Vegas machine online, i get a free fiver bet for the super bowl. I’m going to see if they will give me a whole bunch of free fivers on the super bowl if i deposit a whole bunch of 50 quids on the roulette. I’m quite taken aback by so many offers from firms offering me free bets on these card games and roulettes, it makes a customer feel wanted. Au revoir, i’m off to hammer them at roulette with the savings my grandmother left me, once i read the rules !

February 4, 2010 at 12:43 #273911Corals are being very generous. Place a ten pound bet on the horses. If it loses take your losing slip to the counter and they’ll happily give you a five pound voucher for you to play on the roulette machines, thereby allowing you the opportunity to add to your addictions at no extra cost to yourself. Now that’s what I call a bargain!
Only problem is, that while you’re playing the machine it leaves you even less time to study form and you’ll probably lose even more on the horses. But never mind you’ll get another voucher. Seems like a vicious circle somehow. On the other hand maybe they’d just prefer you to confine your betting to the machines.
I really do believe that these types of inducements to play the machines should be outlawed.

KHere here Ken! Its a bit like a Drug dealer standing outside a Chemist with a tray full of lines of "Coke"! Some poor vulnerables will fall for it! Sad world we live in! As "Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon" would say "the rich are getting richer the poor are getting poorer" Its a world destruction!
February 4, 2010 at 13:29 #273915Ken , agree its sick , but then again if you go to the bookies what can you expect , they want your cash , and as quicky as possible thanks very much
Simple solution , dont go near them , leave the poor bedraggled habituees to it , as they dont know any better
cheers
Ricky
February 4, 2010 at 16:17 #273945They certainly show their largesse to the mob that manufactures their boards. Seven large (exc VAT) for a board that displays some numbers according to Barrington Dennis in today’s Post, with an extra two large for a digital odds board.

I’m gonna cash in my Tennants Super shares and invest in these boardmakers.
February 4, 2010 at 17:05 #273953Unfortunately i lost granny’s savings to a machine controlled by a computer. It doesn’t matter though on two counts, at least i got a free bet, and Davie Duggan on ATR said Masterminded will win the CC, even if he’s 75% fit. I think i will dig deep in my pockets again to recoup those loses. I thought the trainer said he’d only go 100%, but Duggan and his ATR side kicks obviously know better. All bets are off though if he is found to only be 74%.
February 4, 2010 at 17:52 #273970William Hill had an offer a while ago. £30 of free casino play ‘no deposit required.’
One look at the terms & conditions & it turned out that £620 had to change hands before you could withdraw anything. I’ve never been back.I was a bit disgusted in my local Corals a week or two ago. They were giving out tea & biscuits, they had some bunting up & the place was a hive of activity. Why? Because they were launching a new ‘Bullseye’ game on the macihnes.
Then again, they absolutely hate me in there. Usually I’ll go in there, put a pound in the machine & win or lose, walk out again. I’m about £20 up so far. There was a story in the paper today by the way, PartyGaming had posted increased revenues because some idiot won £3million & put half of it back in.
Incidentally, two of the countries biggest bookies are owned by private equity firms, the other three aren’t.
Guess from which side most of the ‘cons’ come from?February 4, 2010 at 19:30 #273997They’re all it it Anthony. I was watching some of Barney Curleys audio reports, and it showed a firm with the red signs shop. Now, all of the advertisements on the windows of their shops were for these gambling machines. Bare in mind the shops were in Cheltenham, and that tells it’s own story. A shop in what some might consider the racing mecca, and horse racing bets were the last things on their minds. It’s scandalous. I would like for people to do to some of these bookies what the disgruntled characters did at the end of a film called ‘Looking For Eric’.
February 4, 2010 at 21:00 #274022A new job means I now frequent a branch of William Hills in Central Edinburgh to place my bets during the week rather than online. Today there was a really old dear at the roulette machine, hands shaking trying to put another quid in the machine. She possibly thought she was at the bingo. Few other workies (in there bright yellow reflective gear) were picking up a football coupon and putting a £10 on the dog race that was about to start…30 seconds later they left…money lost.
The man behind the counter must hate me…I come in, reaffirm preconcieved ideas on that days racing, check latest odds and fill in a slip all within 15 minutes.
February 4, 2010 at 21:49 #274029I don’t see the problem with the machines in all honesty.. Whenever I go in the bookies I will always have a bash with any leftover change I have after putting my bets on.
Horses is my number one, followed by football. I will always pick these out before I go in and put the bets on,then will try my luck after.
One day last week I put a fiver in and within about 3 or 4 minutes had won and collected £120. I’d say in the last 12 months I’ve won over £100 on roulette from a fiver or less on about 8 occasions.
It’s not far off say backing a 66/1 winner on the horses and what’s the chances of that? In about 18 years of gambling I’ve only ever backed one horse that won at 66/1.
It’s like any form of gambling to me, as long as you are in control of yourself and disciplned then I don’t see the problem.

Ironically I was going to praise Ladbrokes because they’ve all got posters up advertising Timeform at the moment. It seems to me the future Manchester United owner’s shops seem to still give racing pride of place. They’ve been doing some interviews with Ruby Walsh & AP McCoy lately. In Manchester branches at least, the machines get shoved out of the way pretty much.
(To avoid any confusion: the future Manchester United owner= Fred Done)

I’ll agree with the sentiment that if I’ve got a couple of pounds in change, I might stick them in the machine but never more than that. It’s these people that shove note after note in that I don’t understand.
In true ‘different strokes for different folks’ style, I think betting on football is a mugs game. Each to their own I suppose.
I’ve actually just come off an online casino. I’d won some on the horses, withdrawn it & left £2 in. Of course I lost the £2 but I played video poker, blackjack & craps & I’d been on it for an hour & a half. £2 for an hour & a half’s entertainment seems alright to me.
Then tomorrow (or the weekend most likely), it’ll be back to the ‘day job’ & a steady trickle of winners!February 5, 2010 at 00:03 #274050I’ll agree with the sentiment that if I’ve got a couple of pounds in change, I might stick them in the machine but never more than that. Each to their own Anthony, if people go out and earn their money and then want to spend it that way then fair play to them. Same as people who want to smoke say £50 worth of cigs a week, or go on a bender and spend £80 or so, or like my missus spending hundreds of pounds on endless amounts of shoes and handbags. It’s each persons own choice.
I love the thrill of a bet, whether that be on the horses, dogs, football , rugby, roulette machine, whatever….
In the eyes of many people on here I’m a ‘mug’ punter cos I go down the bookies and have the type of bets I do.
Well this ‘mug’ is having a cracking year so far and is about £400 in front a month and a bit in, so I’ll continue what I’m doing and enjoy myself doing it and leave the experts and the know it alls to keep putting us down…
February 5, 2010 at 07:10 #274060Zamorston, Fantastic post, dont you go enjoying your own money, doing what gives you a buzz, the eggheads, experts, know alls on here will look down their nose.

Agreed! to each his own and all the better if like Z you’re winning a few bob. Peronally I can’t remember the last time I backed anything else outside of the ponies.
Not sure about what the buzz is though but if it makes you say fookin bastaring thing is fooking useless then I still get it

As far as bookies being generous are concered..they are yoiur ar$e. Sure they will give new members 50 quid if they bet 50 quid the majority of which will lose then or later.
Simply a numbers game to increase members or increase turnover.
Unless you have long standing personal relationship with a bookie I’m afraid he is neither generous or your friend….like you he’s out to win "end of"
Love the thread though, guy’s a nutter
