World Cup winner
European Cup winner
Division One winner x 3
FA Cup winner
Ballon D’Or winnerOver 100 caps for England and 49 goals.
He must be England’s best ever footballer. Perhaps a case can be argued for him being England’s best ever sportsman.
October 21, 2023 at 22:24 #1667687I was fortunate to watch him in his prime during the 1960,s and to be at Wembley when he lifted the European Cup for Manchester United in 1968 .
What a player , what a gentleman. RIP Bobby
October 22, 2023 at 02:44 #1667713Bobby was a good guy – my thoughts pass to his incorrigible big tall bro Jack who stood like a lethargic praying mantis in the Palace goal mouth waiting for a gift.
White legs white shirt !
Lilly white LEEEEDS !RIP Bobby Charlton – a spectacular player, a natch, and a one off. WE ALL LOVED BOBBY !
Sorry Jack
October 22, 2023 at 07:54 #1667729Jack always said Bobby didn’t smile enough however he carried
Munich around with him , I’ll always have Moore as England’s greatest player,( when Pele comes to you to swap shirts its fair to say your above average ) but Sir Bobby was just behind him with ” Banks of England “October 22, 2023 at 08:26 #1667734I may have mentioned this before, but I have this vivid recollection of going to a Stalybridge Celtic match with my Dad and seeing Bobby Charlton playing long after he’d left Manchester United and presumably right at the end of his playing career.
But I cannot find anything about that on Wikipedia or anywhere else.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 22, 2023 at 08:42 #1667739Ian he did play in testimonials and the like , I read Mick Quinns bio and while a director at Wigan in the 80s he played in some friendlies pre season , he near knocked the bar off with a 30 yard shot …… at this point he would have been 42/43
October 22, 2023 at 09:19 #1667741I think this was a League game or a FA Cup qualifying round.
I can see him in my mind’s eye now, bringing the ball forward from the halfway line towards me, stood behind the goal, and he wore a blue kit with white shorts.
Guess I must have dreamed it!

Jimmy Greaves was the best for me.. He got injured and rushed back for the World Cup but missed out on the final.
I met Bobby when he came to Taunton just over 30 years ago doing a football school day.. He was quite sharp with me for not passing the ball. Can’t remember his exact words
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
October 22, 2023 at 10:32 #1667745During the late ’60s and early ’70s I was an irregular at Hillsborough, turning up handful of times a season in order to undergo the useful 90-minute character-building exercise of watching the Owls attempt to imitate a top-flight footbal team
In late August ’68 (last Saturday of the school summer hols) me and two pals along with a pal’s responsible dad charged with keeping we wayward 11//12 years olds in check (tough job Mr Roebuck, hope you’ve recovered) went to watch the game against Manchester United, along with 52,000 others. An amazing match unfolded with the final result being Owls 5 United 4
All the United greats were there: Law scored two goals, Best and Charlton one each, and poor old Stiles managed an own goal. The Wednesday not-so-great Jack Whitham scored a hattrick
Most of my trips to Hillsborough have long-since slipped from the memory but that day remains vivid
RIP Bobby, a twinge of whimsical, nostalgic sadness on hearing of your death
Denis Law is 83 and has dementia too…watch this space
October 22, 2023 at 11:02 #1667749Being up in Dunoon, and Glasgow as a boy, more than a fair distance from
Manchester I never got the chance to see Mr Charlton but he impressed me,
watching reruns, not just in the manner that he could strike a ball from
from distance that would rocket into the net. A brief celebratory wave of
the arms, or a jump, sometimes barely that, and he got on with the game.
He had the demeanour of an unselfish selfless gentlemen, and I think he
carried that throughout his playing career and beyond. I think a lot of
present day players could learn a lot from this great man. I’m sorry to
hear of his passing.October 23, 2023 at 08:41 #1667854My dad said Jimmy greaves and Joe Baker were the best players he saw live. Charlton was a beautifully balanced player with an amazing shot. His shooting was a thing of beauty. One of life’s good guys. R.I.P.
October 23, 2023 at 19:45 #1667905It may not make the top 500 things he’ll be remembered for but who could forget Casdon Soccer ?
Anyone remember the Gerry Monroe tribute record ‘Goodbye Bobby Boy’ ?
