A fascinating and high calibre renewal in store with the Welsh National winner, former Welsh National winner, former Scottish National winner, Grand National Winner, former Ryannair Chase winner and a former winner of this race up against each other along with some extremely good seasoned stayers.
On first glance the progressive Le Beau Bai looks to have the staying department at his feet and is a worthy favourite, but has shot up in the handicap as a result of a fine string of wins so far this season. Having said that though, he is 1lb lower than his mark for the Welsh National so has an excellent chance.
As far as course form is concerned then Coe ticks all the boxes having won twice at Haydock so far along with a number of seconds. His second to Beat The Boys in the Rehearsal at Newcastle is solid and can improve despite being quite high in the weights, but jumps and stays very well and should be in contention with a spot of luck. His owner loves a winner at the course too.
Of the Twiston-Davies runners, Ballyfitz would have to brush up on his jumping to be considered and Hello Bud never runs a bad race and consequently has a very high rating but is probably the best jumper in the field and will make a bold bid from the front. Eachway for the latter for definite at around 18/1.
I find Mon Mome quite interesting in this. It would take a monumental effort to win the National again off his high weight so I’m thinking that this race could provide him with his seasonal victory. The only problem of course is his mark of 153 but judged on his solid last two runs he could be in peak form at a track he’s done well on in the past. Might be worth eachway as well at 14/1.
My idea of the likely winner though is According To Pete from the Malcolm Jefferson yard, who do well here. He also should be in peak condition following a decent run at Cheltenham and at this track last month, and is on a very lenient mark of 134, 3lb lower than his last win. The only question mark would be the trip; he’s won over 3m1f so the extra half mile is a but if an unknown, but off his low weight he should be able to stay.
February 18, 2010 at 14:08 #277580Our Vic for me if he runs –

February 18, 2010 at 14:26 #277584He’s the class horse in the race, no doubt Corm – but the trip has to be a major concern.

Our Vic is entered and jocked up, though I’d agree with Grassy it’s too far for him. Thought all week that he’d been entered to keep the weight off The Package, and Timmy Murphy was already booked for the latter before his fall on Tuesday; NR now though.
Hard to know what to make of the Haydock ground these days, their ‘heavy’ can be anything from g/s to the genuine article, but given the lack of recent rain, I’d expect it to be neare the former than the latter. If it’s genuinely heavy ground Silver By Nature would have a good chance; 2nd (poss unlucky) in the Welsh National, and with only a 7lb rise ought to be up there.February 18, 2010 at 16:30 #277609I’m looking forward to seeing Snoopy Loopy run again
According to Pete would be my pick, but L’Aventure interests me too
February 18, 2010 at 23:11 #277720Miko De Beauchene for me. He looks well handicapped with Will Biddick taking off 5 lbs and the soft fences will help him out.
Apart from falls, he has only been out of the first four once (unsuitable ground) in handicap chases.
EDIT: More than that actually, ATR was playing up last night.
February 19, 2010 at 14:04 #277817Well According to Pete has been withdrawn, so it’s back to the drawing board for me.
No reason behind his withdrawal as of yet…
February 19, 2010 at 14:54 #277831Miko De Beauchene was my main ante-post bet, with two others falling by the wayside, and just a saver on Coe.
Coleman opting for Mon Mome seems significant, so I’ve had a bet on that one as well. Should really be up to winning this.
February 19, 2010 at 22:17 #277939Silver By Nature is my tip got 7/1 earlier this week when i first looked at the race
February 19, 2010 at 23:06 #277958I’ve no idea who’s going to win this but I’m almost obligated to back Mon Mome & Our Vic. Mon Mome I always have a bit on & it was such a pleasure to see Our Vic win at Haydock last time.
It’s as wide open a chase as I’ve seen for a while that’s for sure.
February 20, 2010 at 02:50 #277978First 6 from Welsh National re-oppose. Maybe we should remove the Warwick Classic from the calendar, so that happens every year.
February 20, 2010 at 11:40 #278023I’m surprised nobody has mention POMME TIEPY.
16-1 about a Willie Mullins 7-Y-0 with grade 1 form yet only carrying 10st today, in fact 9st 11 considering his superb jockey’s 3 lbs allowance (Katie Walsh).
This about a horse that was second favourite in The RSA as a 5-Y-O only two years ago. Sounds like value to me, I’ll be having a rare bet in a handicap, although only 5 points ewFebruary 20, 2010 at 17:09 #278089Very happy he thrashed them today a future national horse for next year.Any thoughts about him.Happy he won as well
February 20, 2010 at 19:22 #278131Absolutely hacked up didn’t he? Improving fast.
Special mention to Our Vic though who was a pleasure to watch tanking along and jumping for fun out in front.
February 20, 2010 at 20:41 #278145Great to see Our Vic retaining so much enthusiasm in his dotage, after a career that hasn’t been without it’s setbacks along the way.
The In-Running layers must have been delighted when he turned-in with a healthy lead, apparently still full of running.
