Sticking to just big field handicaps but more precisely the more valuable ones and the instances in which I believe the trainers have targeted said races.

Starting off with the Victoria Cup at Ascot today over 7f. I like the look of Squats at 22/1, trained by a man who is incredibly adept when it comes to producing well-handicapped horses I believe this horse will have improved a fair amount over the winter which is why he’s been sent here, his mark of 98 is very reasonable as I believe he has the ability to be a 105-110 horse this season. With this being his first run of the season he should be not only fresh but tuned up to the task as well. He has a decent apprentice jockey on board who takes off what could be an incredibly important 7lbs, the benefits of this even more so due to the fact that he hasn’t been ridden by a claimer in at least 2 years if not ever (can’t remember who rode him his first few races). He has a draw in the middle (13) which lessens the hindrance of his jockey being less-experienced than others in the race. The horse will act on the quick ground and the step up to 7f should bring out a good deal of improvement as well with him finishing strongly in many of his races at the back-end of last season over 6f. Squats has performed respectably in big-field handicaps before and though never winning one he has finished close enough to the winners that I don’t see the number of runners today being a problem for him. He should travel strongly through the field and not be put-off by his rivals.

    Victoria Cup
    Bet365 top 5 e/w
    £20 e/w Mutawathea 28/1

Horse came 2nd in a big field handicap at Goodwood last year on summer ground over 7f, has a claimer on board taking off 5lbs, new yard which could bring out improvement, performing well this season, the horse may relish the switch back to turf, trainer in very good form. 28/1 was too good to turn down. Solid horse who should run a solid race and his mark of 99 doesn’t seem past him.

Good stuff Ben, love these big Saturday handicaps on the flat, look forward to seeing your thoughts on them ascribe season goes on.

I’m with you on Squats definitely, and just topped up at 25’s. I’m hoping to see Rivellino and Emell chase him home.

Thanks VtC, Squats never really fired today, maybe the Victoria cup wasn’t the target after all, will definitely keep an eye on his enteries though with the view of backing him again in a big field 7f handicap.

Fortunately we had the 2nd and I wasn’t given too much false hope of winning with the Godolphin horse flying down the inside.

Mutawathea returned £160 so we’re in profit

    + £70
