Such a shame Blazing Bailey does not wear blinkers. With the King yard in even better form than Henderson now, he would’ve been the bet in this. However now:
Surely the only question in your mind should be is he good enough?
Alan King did experiment with them but has clearly decided they made no difference. They may even have been repsonsible for him hanging badly at Aintree.
The fact is he dropped them and the horse easily won a flat race without them and he ran as straight as a dye.
Do you think he would send him for 100,000 pounds race without them if he thought they could help him win?
As far as his form is concerned Nicky is still maintaining a 27+ % strike rate for the entire season where as Alan King is 19% increasing to 24 % recently.A couple of good weeks granted but on average along way to go yet.
When you take trainers form in to consideration Fist, it is the last 2 weeks or even one week that matter.
Horses with blinkers often only have one or two good runs in a season with blinkers before they get used to them and their form tails off. Given the choice of this £100,000 race or the Stayers Hurdle I am sure Alan King will want to win in March.
Have a mythical even tenner Blazing Bailey wears blinkers In the World Hurdle. His flat win was a poor race, conditional jockeys if I remember right. Did not need to be anywhere near his jumping form.
Hope he runs well because I have backed him for the big one.

December 20, 2008 at 19:23 #198277Jeez.
What a day for Nicky Henderson.
That was so impressive.
That turn of speed after 3 miles too, that was impressive.
December 20, 2008 at 19:23 #198278Through the race I thought Blazing Bailey would win but Punchestowns looked very, very good today. Henderson is holding all the aces at the moment.
December 20, 2008 at 19:25 #198279Very impressive, well happy with that, that 12-1 is looking very good now shabby…
Done out of a World Hurdle bet in one race, and back with a stronger one in the next..
December 20, 2008 at 19:44 #198283Two outstanding performances in quick succession.
Travelled well and a decent turn of foot at the end. He obviously handles Cheltenham and all roads lead to the World Hurdle.
Blazing Bailey will be a different proposition with blinkers reapplied at The Festival, but it’s hard to envisage him reversing the form.
Pettifour looks a shade short at this level and we are yet to know if the talented Elusive Dream stays three miles, but he defeated Punchestowns at Cheltenham over two miles-five in April.
Kasbah Bliss will be like nothing the winner has ever faced before and the Doumen horse is still the one to beat in March, assuming Inglis Drever doesn’t return.
December 20, 2008 at 20:19 #198297Whenyou look at how many mistakes punchestowns made in that race, and that he then won it so easily going better with every yard. He’ll be hard to beat come cheltenham if Henderson can iron out a few of his quirks.
The world hurdle division been a bit of a weak division for a few years now and has looked like it needs something smart for a while, and I think punchestowns is it on todays performance. All due respect to the drever but I think Howard Johnsons mind may have been made up for him today.

Bloody awesome display and boy did I get that one wrong……Duc ran well but that PTowns made him look very ordinary…..That’s one bet at Chelters gone for a burton

Hard to knock a dog that has been barking "Binocular" since he was a double-figure price, Fists. You can’t win them all.
Punchestowns is a real sickener for me. I backed him reasonably heavily for the RSA Chase at fancy prices back in October, and don’t have so much as a brass farthing on the ****** for the Stayers. C’est la guerre.
December 21, 2008 at 16:49 #198425Looks very very special this one and a future Gold Cup winner if ever I’ve seen one if they decide to go down that route in the future.

He looks a very talented animal, but I’d never try and turn a staying hurdler into a Gold Cup horse.

Good effort from Punchestown, bookies overreacted though (as usual) imo.
