One thing you may wish to look into is claiming working tax credit. I think you can say legitimately you are working 30 hours a week but don’t have any taxable income (or very little), even if the betting is profitable. This is not unusual for self-employed people in a recession. Have a look on the govt website and see how much you can get. https://www.gov.uk/working-tax-credit/overview

No offence to Betlarge, but I’m not too comfortable with the idea of my taxes subsidising professional gamblers.

    Absolutely.

If you can’t make it pay enough you should find other work. The idea of the state topping up earnings for inadequate gamblers is ridiculous and clearly against the spirit, albeit possibly not the letter, of the law.

The crazed ramblings of a man who’s yet to see the new Jaguar F-Type:

    Shallowly yours,

My aspirations run no higher than this:

    Pompously yours,

Drone – a right on write off, or write on right off

True story: a pal of mine once went for a test drive in a Jaguar XJS who commented to the dealer something along the lines ‘nice motor but the boot’s very small, you wouldn’t get much garden refuse in there’. To which the dealer pointedly replied ‘if that’s your primary concern sir may I suggest you purchase a Wartburg Two-Stroke’…which was rather nice :)

Indeed, and to make it clear lest anyone thought my ‘advice’ to Ginger of signing-on was serious: it wasn’t, remiss of me to exclude a spattering of winkies and smilies

The decision to forego paid work and voluntarily remove yourself from the jobs market to embark on a selfish, closeted venture such as full-time betting is a lifestyle choice; somewhat brave may be, but an unforced choice nevertheless and as such certainly does not entitle you to claim State Benefits

Ginger to his credit pointed this out

A major problem with a lax welfare system is that an increasing number know their entitlements but a diminishing number realise their responsibilities
