Its rare these days that I have a bet in a shop – vast majority online.

This morning I was having a couple of pints with some friends and decided to pop into the local Betfred shop to have a “mullins” day 1 accumulator. Having struck my bet there was a “shorty” running in a race at Turffontein. I put a bet on as they were loading. They accepted the bet and i watched my selection win.

I went to collect only to be told it was a “non runner” because I had placed my bet after the off time.

They accepted the bet and led me to believe that it was on. I put it to them if it had lost would they have come out to the shop floor and refunded my stake? Like hell they would.

I complained to their customer service but unsurprisingly they defended their staff.

I told them this is a disgrace and betting shops are struggling as it is. They denied betting shops are struggling.

Has anybody else had a similar problem and if so did you get it resolved.

They say a poor customer service experience causes multiple users to boycott that company. Well can I beseech my fellow formats not to use Bettered anymore!

On the other hand, your accumulator has got off to a good start!

I'd like to live in a place where they cordon off swans...

Your betting slip has the time at which the bet was placed clearly displayed. It is easy to find the “no more bets” time in shops, usually on their results screens.

Feel sorry for you Ivanjica although hopefully your acca has paid off.
When it is a bet on an overseas race the TV coverage could lag behind, so it is not surprising they don’t want to take bets after off time. It’s no doubt in their rules which punters need to be careful of. True, they would not have run after you had the horse lost, but only because they would not have realised the error.

Not exactly the same, nearest I can come up with (that’s happened to me) is a difference of opinion with a Tote telephonist. Way back before Exchanges and when they’d take a bet after the off… Just as they were entering the stalls for a sprint, told her the bet I wanted but after she fumbled around took so long she accepted the bet just after the horse had passed the post in fourth. “Hold On”! I said, I want my money back. She was not obliging and refused to alter the bet. I insisted in talking to a supervisor. When I explained that any bet when struck needs to have a chance of winning, he checked the time of bet and apologised…

Had I been a punter who did not know the rules the bet would’ve been a loser.

Another occasion I was just finishing a bet on a French race when the gates opened and the horse jinked so badly and unseated. Again, no bet.
