Admiral, I’d have said it was the last place for Long Run before they took the wooden cores from the fences. I’m confident it’s now an easier course to jump than Cheltenham and, arguably, quite a few other park courses.
There is little substance to the rubber cores. The spruce is not bound to anything in the way birch is, and just sits loose on top. I’d be happy to jump it myself without a horse – seriously.
The only downside for LR is that he might get so far behind off a hot pace, he’ll be pulled up. Future GNs will be harum scarum for as long as the lightweights can maintain a gallop. Long Run has long needed a serious stamina test – as he got in his first Gold Cup.
Have never backed him, but admire his constitution, given the number of do-or-die races he’s had. But every tough challenge shaves a bit more off his longevity. Were he mine, he’d not run again till Aintree.
All this, of course,
in my opinion

Not sure I go along with that Admiral, I don’t know how fair it is to call a horse that has run 28 times, has never fallen and never looked like falling, a poor jumper. I’m not saying he jumps like a stag, but even when he makes the occasional mistake (the one he made in the Charlie Hall would have put most horses on the deck)he is so clever he keeps on his feet.
I’m not wanting to start the SWC war again, but as we are talking about his jumping, I have always felt that Sam doesn’t always see the right stride and it’s more to Long Run’s credit as a jumper that he has always stayed on his feet.
My worry is not his jumping, I’m more concerned that he might just be paying for the long tough campaigns he has had over the past 2/3 years. His run in the Charlie Hall was just too bad, and the subsequent analysis of it showed he had just about brought a fence down at chest height and scoped badly with blood in the scope, I don’t think anything can be made of that other than me probably made the worst mistake he has ever made. If I’m honest, I’m more concerned at the way he finished in the Betfair, he just looked a bit tame when previously, even when he has been beaten, he always puts up a gutsy fight. So going by that, if the Charlie Hall can be written off, then that leaves us with one relatively poor effort.
I’m a fan of Long Run but I’m not sticking my head in the sand here, I am concerned about his slightly lacklustre run in the Betfair. A week, as they say, is a long time in racing, but putting it in perspective, he was beaten in one race by three very good horses, with Bobs worth behind him. Does that mean he’s a better horse than Bobs Worth, absolutely not, but it is just one race. I think the King George will tell us all we need to know about him, the track suits him and he has never run a bad race there. If he runs a bad race there, I can see RWC taking him out of the hurly burly of racing under rules and letting him finish off a pretty amazing career in a less demanding field. The money aspect obviously won’t be a consideration for him.
As for the National, I go along with Joe on this, I don’t think he would have a problem with the fences, it’s just whether the flame has finally started to flicker. If the appetite is gone, then it’s time to hang up his horse boots. If you had offered me 20/1 a month ago for Long Run in the KG, I would have snatched the hand off you, and yet that’s what he is trading at now. I don’t know if he particularly likes Haydock, he has never won there, but he most certainly loves Kempton. If he is anything like the animal he once was, he simply would not be out of the first three on KG day. Kauto Star was all but written off after having run three times in 2011 without a win, only to return in the Betfair in November and romp it at 6/1 !!!!! and then going onto win the KG at 3/1 in what, at 11years, I think was his best performance…officially described as "awesome".
The horse owes me nothing, I’ve had a good return over the years, so I’m not going to give the Nero’s thumbs down just yet, and just for the record, I will stick a few quid on him e/w at 20s and hope that Lazarus wasn’t a one off.
November 27, 2013 at 19:03 #459987Cue Card 33/1 with Paddy to win both Betfair and King George. Any value in that?
Hope you grabbed a piece of the action.
No……

But I hope Joe did?
I was not aware the bet was available until you mentioned it Nathan. I considered backing Cue Card ante-post outright for the King George, but thought if he failed to win/stay in the Betfair probably wouldn’t go to Kempton anyway. So made sense to go for the 40/1 double!!!

Thanks Nathan
If Cue Card wins I’ll buy you Fish And Chips at Newbury!
Value Is EverythingNovember 27, 2013 at 19:12 #459990I guess you haven’t seen Colin in tears on the telly; all embarrassed about it
. There were several ‘feel good’ ending that could have come out of this race, but I think this was the best of them. Mind you, I’m still smarting from not backing Cue Card when he won the bumper [someone on here was saying how good he was even back then; wasn’t you was it?]. Backed Al Ferof I did that day [still backing him; never learn, me].
Might have been me you’re thinking of Moehat.

If the thread is still around you will find I was the first to mention him on here for the Fesival bumper. It was my biggest ever win – you don’t need much on at 40/1. Also tipped him up on another well known forum. I actually had an email read out on RUK suggesting if he were trained by Willie Mullins he would be favourite. Of course Lydia and Eddie didn’t take much notice.

Sorry Stilvi
It’s just that Moehat mentioned Al Ferof/Supreme Novices, so thought itmight
be me. Your mention supercedes mine
. The Fontwell run did indeed look something special, not that I acted on it.

No problem, there are some terrific trumpet blowers on here – I am quite happy to be in the 33/1 bar category.
