Cracking race. Cue Card nailed the others to the floor.

My lad Dynaste ran a brave race too though :)

There will be other days for Bobs Worth.

Steeple: Well done with Cue Card mate, admire your loyalty and hope you had a nice win today :-)

Also a massive ‘cheers’ as I love a long distance double so joined you in the Betfair/KG double, only to a tenner but will keep me going over Xmas! Now have that bet alongside a nice EW wager on AlFerof for the KG

Cue Card 33/1 with Paddy to win both Betfair and King George. Any value in that?

Hope you grabbed a piece of the action.

Very nice reappearance from Silviniaco Conti there. He travelled well and just lacked a little race fitness in the finish. I would back him confidently to turn this form around later in the season.

Well done to Cue Card and his backers, though. I have never seen this horse jump better. I guess this is a demonstration of how horses mature with age. When a young Cue Card travelled smoothly and wilted to nothing in the Supreme Novices Hurdle, you could have never convinced me that he would one day out-slog seasoned three-milers in a soft-ground Betfair Chase.

You never stop learning in this sport.

What a massive race from Cue Card ! That seemed frankly easy for him… A nice season awaits him. Congratulations to all who believed in him today!

Silviniaco Conti was quite excellent too. He might be my favourite for the next KG.

Long Run is quite disappointing again, even if he ran better than the last time out. For the moment, he no longer seems to be the horse he was… However I don’t forget him because I think he is still able to win some big races during this season. He’s tough.

Thought the Moon had come out early but i realised it must have been Joe’s big grin !!! Can see it from here !!

What a performance from Cue Card. He’s a wonderful horse and now a very worthy favourite for the King George – puts that Exeter performance into persepctive.

Cracking race. Thought Bobs lacked pace but also some match fitness, like many of Henderson’s runners they seem to be travelling well but lack that finishing kick.
Dynaste ran well here but you have to wonder what he could have achieved in the Hennessy off 159.

Well done Joe, your faith in Cue Card was handsomely rewarded. I actually felt at one stage that one or both of the placed horses might outstay him late on but he found plenty. Nice to see Colin Tizzard emotional after the race, it obviously meant a lot to him and good luck to him.

For me, Bobs Worth was never really going today and that is his worst ever finishing position over the sticks. I am not convinced another furlong and Cheltenham will help him make up that sort of ground on those who finished well ahead today. He may have been underdone today but it looked seriously underdone. Another "One and you’re done" Gold Cup winner?

Long Run looked a bit like time may be catching up with him.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

They should enter Long Run in the World Hurdle. Run him in the KG with ear plugs in. If that doesn’t improve his form then try him over hurdles. At the moment i doubt he’ll win a race like this again.

Waley Cohen too proud a man though.

Backed Dynaste so slightly dissapointed but big well done to Cue Card, if I had to choose pre race who i’d prefer to win if Dynaste didn’t I’d have personally said the very likeable Cue Card.

Hypothetical question, would Sprinter Sacre have beaten this lot today?

Yes, let’s hope so. I didn’t fancy Cue Card’s chances today but did think that he would retain his Haldon Gold Cup crown earlier this month. Didn’t realise it was just a prep race for this :)

Have to say I agree with you; World Hurdle would seem a fair option. But I wonder if he’s one of those precocious French breds that peaks early and loses his pace a bit – you could argue Master Minded was another.

Just got back from Haydock, still smiling! Thanks for the kind comments, and well done to other Cue Card backers.

I’m so pleased for the TIzzards, and for the horse who has galloped most of his critics into the ground today (hang your head, Mark Howard). I’ve never seen him jump better, and credit once more to Joe Tizzard. He’s not the most stylish but, like Cue Card, he has his own way of doing things. As mentioned on the King George thread, Joe takes no chances with CC. If he sees a stride, he’ll ask him up, and I’ve never seen him get anything but a fine leap. But if he’s uncertain of the stride, he’ll let the horse fiddle – the 10th today was a perfect example of this.

Since I watched the horse win on his fencing debut, I was convinced he’d be a steeplechasing star, but every time I see him I learn a wee bit more. After today, I’m pretty sure that going left handed and soft ground are both important to him. He definitely jumps better this way round. He should get his ground in the King George, but I suspect he won’t jump quite so well.

Dynaste surprised me. I’ve never rated him. When Grands Crus was at the Dynaste stage, I suspected he was soft and I’d put Dynaste in the same camp. But given that was his seasonal debut, he could get closer at Kempton where running clockwise will suit him better than CC.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I believed Silv Conti might crack under pressure, but that could well have been a fitness issue today so I’m back to being undecided about him.

Bobs Worth looked superb in the paddock – I thought he had an almost tangible charisma. He’s not that big but looks superbly put together; lovely horse. That ground and track would not have been to his liking, especially the ground. I get the impression he likes to feel confident on take off at his fences from having something ‘solid’ to spring from. He wouldn’t have enjoyed that slipping feeling, and I think you’ll see a completely different horse back at his beloved Festival.

What of Cue Card’s Gold Cup chances? Well he wasn’t stopping today and he probably had an easier race than most if not all of the field. There’s a good dose of stamina on his dam’s side, and there’s a fair chance that staying is where he will finally find the ideal outlet for his huge engine. If the ground is soft in March, I’d bet him in front of Bobs Worth (and I’m heavily into BW ante-post, albeit with a saver on CC just in case he did exactly what he did today).

Long Run looks as though he’s gone now at this trip, and I was glad to hear the National is on his agenda. His jumping frailties shouldn’t hold him back now that the cores have been removed from the GN fences. Those back end leg-drops will just drag loose spruce off, and an extreme test like that should suit him very well unless it is the string of hard races that have dulled his edge, in which case, I suspect he’ll be a PU on the GN results page. He’s a fine looking horse and a great servant. Connections have never been afraid to race him although they might well now be paying the price for putting such a young horse through so many gruelling challenges.

Anyway, for those of you still awake, forgive me for droning on – still high on adrenaline! Roll on the King George

I guess you haven’t seen Colin in tears on the telly; all embarrassed about it

. There were several ‘feel good’ ending that could have come out of this race, but I think this was the best of them. Mind you, I’m still smarting from not backing Cue Card when he won the bumper [someone on here was saying how good he was even back then; wasn’t you was it?]. Backed Al Ferof I did that day [still backing him; never learn, me].

He’s matured in the last twelve months. Watched it three times now and it’s some display.

Think connections of several 2 and 2 1/2 mile chasers will also have been happy with this result as it’s highly unlikely that Cue Card will be defending his Ryanair title.

I respect what you are saying, but I really think running such a poor jumper as Long Run in the National simply because he’s too slow to win proper chases any more is not the best idea in the world. No wonder horses get hurt in that race. It’s for certified good jumpers, and Long Run is not one of those. I’m afraid to say I do not approve of this laissez faire attitude to running anything with a few decent runs under its belt in the GN with no genuine assessment of it’s jumping ability. With the GN seemingly teetering on the brink of public opinion, surely trainers need to recognise their horses limitations?
