Its ‘Back a 4/1 winner on Channel 4’ promotion has made the Advertising Standards people cross.

“[Bet365 stated] the viewer backed horses each way and they were unlikely to lose any money, which was “bad business”.”

Thats the thing about all these promotions, they are designed to suck new people in and then once they are there hopefully get them playing slots or whatever and blowing all their cash.

There will always be a few who work a way out of exploiting the offer and getting their granny, cousin, neighbour and dog to also sign up and somehow guaranteeing a profit. Good on those few that get away with it i say.

Its not news of course that the bookie will frown upon this and try and prevent.

At least the complaint was upheld.

Their response is priceless…. They should be fined. The advert does not mention those specific eligibility criteria and how they can keep a straight face and accuse people of using the exchanges to lock in profit is beyond me…

The term "winner" seem ambiguous as well.
Is it a winning bet or a winning horse?
Would not a 4/1+ winner mean that an EW horse had to be 16/1 to 20/1 price for the place part to "win" and even then a non-winning place would not count for a free next bet as horse did not win. The EW bettors were making it easier for the bookmaker.

After such draconian treatment – one step short of sending Bet365 to its room – I am sure the company will never dare to try to pull a fast one in future…

When they were still laying me I had the same problem- they found a mythical £25 maximum to the free bet which wasn’t mentioned in the promotion anywhere and even to get that you had to make multiple representations. Give them a swerve altogether, they’re a bunch of fiddlers and I wish there was a way to stop them appearing on my oddschecker annoying me with mythical prices.

All bookmakers should be forced by LAW to state how many winning accounts have been closed since 2000. It should take up a minimum of 15% OF the ADVERTISING space.

Strange use of language here. Translations are as follows:

back horses each way = backed them with bet365 and allegedly laid them elsewhere (ie arbed). Not to be confused with the more common use of the term ie win&place bets

recreational gambler = compulsive gambler that bets on all races

they believed someone was using betting exchanges = the punter has a note on his account with the word BOGEYMAN in big letters. Unless the Data Protection Act has been broken how do they know about his activities elsewhere? They are engaging in pure supposition.
