This is my list in order of merit of best performances over distance of over a mile and a half amongst British and Irish racehorses.

1.Dancing Brave in 1986 Prix de L’Arc De Triomphe

Revealed acceleration or biodynamics in racing in regions of the sublime, not traversed before.Dancing Brave on that day could sit with the Gods of Olympus.I have never seen a racehorse make such a dramatic reversal in the closing stages like character just jumped into an epic to create a 360 degree turn in plot.Conquered the very best field with horses like Bering,Sharastani,Tryptich,Shardary,Archenango and Darara. When he set off to make his final bid he travelled at double the speed of the opposition and created sensation of a big bunch of stars extinguished in the galaxy and a comet arriving.Fastest ever last furlong of 11.2 secs.

    2.Shergar in 1981 Epsom Derby

Never in the history of the race has a horse won by such a wide margin of 10 lengths which could have been extended to 15 if the Jockey had not pulled him up.Took supremacy over rivals in sport to metaphysical proportions giving the vibration of only one horse running in the race at the finish.I could hardly imagine a greater spectacle in sport than watch Shergar cruise like a passenger train in the straight .Reminiscent of a manifestation of the divine. His opposition was relatively weak but the distance he spared at the post spoke for itself.

3.Mill Reef in 1971 King George

Revealed grace in racing in regions of divinty arguably even surpassing the performance of Nijinsky the previous year.Crushed his rivals by a then record 6 lengths mercilessly in the manner of a bulldozer performing a combing operation but still his strides resembled the subtle touches of a painters brush.I have never seen a colt reveal such reserves of energy after hitting the front who extended his lead even after passing the winning post!Defeated class horses like Ortis,Caro and Stintino.

    4.Nijinsky in 1970 King George

Never has a racehorse looked more majestic or imperious literally toying with his rivals as though performing a waltz. The wining margin could well have even been tripled.Resembled an emperor leading a procession. For sheer virtuosity simply at the top of the tree and the ultimate epitome of thoroughbred racing energy.Conquered a filed which included previous year’s Derby winner Blakeney,Coronation Cup winner Caliban,Oaks winner Crepellana and Washington International winner Karabas.

    5.Harbinger in 2010King George

Longest winning margin of 15 lengths ever in the King George reminiscent of a great Emperor mercilessly inflicting a humiliating defeat on the enemy. Not at top because opposition was not so notable.

    6.Treve in 2014 Arc

Astonishing acceleration in the final furlong which may have even been hard for a Mill Reef or Nijinksy to overpower.

7.Golden Fleece in 1982 Epsom Derby

Devastating finishing burst reminiscent of a motorcar doubling it’s speed in the final furlong .To me surpassed even the performances of Nijinsky or Mill Reef in the Derby.

8.Roberto in 1972 Benson and Hedges Gold cup

Set a scorching pace and like a magician performing a trick ran the great Brigadier Gerard of his legs to win in course record time.

9.Sir Ivor in 1968 Epsom Derby

Revealed a burst reminiscent of gunpowder exploding, resembling the surgical operation of an army battalion coming out of an ambush giving a death blow to the enemy. It virtually looked as though another race had started when the colt blazed into full stride to win going away by a length and a half.Simply energy of a racehorse exuded at it’s supreme zenith.

    10.Mill Reef in 1971 Arc

Penetrated a small gap in afield that almost looked impregnable to run away from everyone with the ease of a ballad dancer.Beat the very best like Pistol Packer and Caro lengthening lead with every stride after hitting the front.

11.Montjeu in 2000 King George /Generous in 1991 King George

Montjeu displayed devastating acceleration to win with remorseless ease with the winning margin of 2 lengths hardly showing his merit.Generous left the opposition cold by 7 lengths as though they were leaves tossed in a gale.

    12.Lamttaara in 1995 Epsom Derby

Gave a sensational burst of speed being 6 lengths in arrears with a furlong to go to win by 1 length in the fastest time for 60 years..Above all it hardly had any preparation .Reminiscent of a storm interrupting or sunniest of days .

    13.Alleged in 1978 Arc

Inspite of not getting an opportunity to set the pace in characteristic style pulled away as effortlessly as any great horse in the last furlong against top class opponents like Trillion and Dancing Maid.

14.Sir Ivor in 1968 Washington International

Took bravery to a crescendo with an outstanding finishing burst in the most testing conditions.Beat some of the classiest colts like Fort Marcy inspite of having to cross over the Atlantic.

    15.Troy winning the 1979 Derby

He simply looked dead and buried at the bend but magnificiently ressurected flying like the wings of Pegasus to cruise to the pinnacle of glory in the 200th Derby.Spared 7 lengths at the winning post making his rivals look like bullocks pulling carts.
