As a child I saw these in a posh shop in the Lanes in Brighton (before being chased away). I became obsessed as it was the time when new models were being introduced so seemed that every time I passed, another one appeared. My family could never afford them. Small version of 1930s Derby winner Bois Roussell was in my mum’s Kay’s catalogue but we couldn’t even afford that at the time. Anyone got any? I have now got Arkle, Red Rum, Grundy (best model in my opinion), Nijinsky and show jumper Psalm. Missing Troy, The Minstrel and Mill Reef. They later did Mr Frisk, Lammtarra and Desert Orchid but they are very poor quality compared to the earlier ones.
May 15, 2023 at 23:24 #1647967You see, I see the word “Berwick” and think of: Berwick Rangers FC and the time my father took me to Berwick-On-Tweed, drove north of the town, crossed a bridge, turned the car round and drove back over it, then said: “There, never say I never take you abroad. We’ve just been to Scotland and back.”
And Royal Doulton just makes me think of No Bombs, who I once saw win on the Flat at Beverley, in that big handicap hurdle at Haydock Park back in the day.
None of that self-indulgent, narcissistic, nonsense is of any relevance or use whatsoever, but when did that ever stop me?

It’s just been rebuilt and is an amazing sight. Berwick is one of my favourite places in the world. We went to the riding of the bounds ceremony there the other week albeit sadly not on horseback. If I moved permanently to Northumberland Berwick is where I’d live. I love it. And it’s quite close to Kelso too.
May 16, 2023 at 11:21 #1647997I was 14 at the time, so wasn’t paying much attention to detail, Moehat.
It was 1977, my family was staying in a place called Embleton on holiday and all I can remember is: cricket on the village green, buying my first ever Sporting Chronicle in a tiny newspaper kiosk in Alnwick Town square the day The Minstrel won the King George, driving quite near Hadrian’s Wall and visiting and walking Hexham racecourse on a non-racing day – place was full of tents and caravans IIRC.

May 16, 2023 at 14:58 #1648010Phew!
When I saw Tonge as last poster I thought I was about to get a right telling off for hijacking the thread!
And deservedly so!
I’ve never knowingly been to Beswick (if it’s even a place) so, to the relief of all, I’ll fetch me coat.

They didn’t realise I’m more of a SEA THE STARS superfan.
May 16, 2023 at 19:57 #1648035Just remembered – my father gave me some sort of horse effort model thing on my 21st birthday.
God knows why, it was the last thing I was interested in and basically something he’d probably have liked to receive himself.
If so, he kinda got his wish – I purposely left without it and thankfully never saw it again.
