Firstly Big Mac isn’t on BBC.

I have actually enjoyed the Beebs Ascot coverage. I don’t usually watch the racing on terrestrial TV but I’m not keen on ATR’s live coverage it lacks atmosphere and spark, RUK are far better at live meetings.

ATR’s coverage is absolutely atrocious. Yes, we are lucky to have it but it still doesn’t change the fact that it is awful.

    RUK are excellent.

Aside from the execrable sycophancy to all things Royal, the BBC’s coverage has been very good.

Agreed. ATR have the Sunday Forum which I adore. Their coverage of live racing though is ……. in a word ……….. boring!

ATR’s coverage improved 10-fold today when a certain loudmouth presenter wasn’t on duty.

If it’s not Pour Moi will not win the Derby, or Canford Cliffs needs to quicken twice and will not beat Goldikova, it’s saying that a horse has won a photo finish by a neck when it actually got beat a short head.

Ok, fair enough to the guy for expressing his opinions so strongly, and generally backing them up with good reasoning (most times), but it’s hard to stomach him sometimes when he’s in his loud, cocksure mood.

I like Matt Chapman he’s the only one who brings any life to ATR even though he does talk some junk sometimes.

Its all about opinions but Matt Chapman and Gina Brice are the only redeeming features of ATR.

God knows why they employ the likes of Luke Harvey, Richard Pitman, Gordon Brown, Zoe Bird, Simon Mapletoft, Tony Ennis, Richard Perham and Jason Weaver. Excruciating.

Probably because any of them are better than listening to Matt Chapman spout nonsense.

I go with BBC’s coverage any day. ATR makes a big deal of Royal Ascot, but they do nothing but go on and on about betting and the odds and little about the racing, unless they feel the punters are hard done by.

I always think the BBC do a good job with their race coverage for the big meetings, although Claire Balding does my head in some what.

As for ATR i much prefer them to RUK. Chapman is a plonker but funny to listen to, he is also good at asking the trainers the dificult questions that most ohter presenters wouldnt dream to and putting them on the spot.

One thing ATR has over the BBC by a mile is superior commentary on the races. Simon Holt & Richard Hoiles are the two best commentaters in the Buisness by a long way. Jim Mcgrath sounds like an amatuer when compared to those two.

Isn’t this thread sort of defunct now the opening post has been removed?

I’m really enjoying the BBC’s coverage this year, and have forgiven Willie Carson for advising we all put our house on So You Think and constantly calling Fame and Glory

    Flaming Glory

, he did it so many times before the Gold Cup that Clare Balding & Rishi just raised a tired eyebrow to camera.

However, I would like to see more of the horses in the paddock as there is such a short space between races and the bell for jockeys to mount has gone off long before they start to show us the runners parading in the paddock.

Makes me smile just how many times Aiden O’Brien says ‘Listen’ when he is giving an interview.
We are listening Aiden, very very hard.

is it me, or did At The Races spend more time broadcasting live from Cheltenham train station for the Festival than they have done from Ascot this year?

When they’ve got a free rein to do what they want from Ascot, we see more of Chapman in his booth (ridiculously dressed in full morning dress) than at the racecourse. Surely they could do some nice features to fill the time?

Hear hear. Also, I really like Jason Weaver in the paddock. A good judge.

Willie Carson may have been a fine jockey, but as a racing pundit, he is the pits. He is unbelievably inarticulate and about as interesting as a soggy lettuce.

John Parrott’s repeated vacant turn and look to camera at the end of each piece with the fat fella does my head in
