I’ve always thought Frankel would have won any turf race between 5f and 12f. Who would get your vote if he faced Battaash in a match over 5f at Goodwood, if both were 4yo, and how would have it priced?

Frankel! He had fierce, fervent power that, in my opinion, would’ve been unstoppable over 5F.

Quite agree Ghost. Would have loved to see him over 5f.

I suspect many of the great milers would also have been champion sprinters, but sprinting is less prestigious.

Frankel was a freak but id think battaash at his best would take a lot of beating

    Good.

Last genuinely top class miler I remember trying a sprint G1 was Proclamation, who failed.

    That’s from memory though!

Frankel to go off fav as the weight of money and Battaash inconsistency’s
However I think Frankel would have to pretty much floor it and Battaash if at his best would have a horse to lead him into the final furlong still on the bridle. Personally I’d take Battaash at his best but at 4 y/o he was still a bit temperamental.

Hmm. I buggered it up a bit then, should have just said ‘off levels, at their best’.

2-2 vote wise thus far. Unless Befair mean Frankel with his comment?

Was expecting a Frankel heavy victory tbh, so I’m both intrigued and grateful for the responses.

My mate was fuming at the tail end of Frankel’s career when he went to the Champion Stakes. Repeatedly fumed “he should hack up in the L’Abbaye thinking he’s on the way to post, have a pick of grass, then win The Arc.”. 😆

I’m sure I am in the minority in picking Battaash.
I took Frankel on all through his 3 y/o campaign before waving the white flag.. :rose:

I love Frankel and he’s the best i’ve ever seen but over 5f i’d side with Battaash away from Ascot….

We never got to the bottom of Frankel though. He won his races with such authority and ease that I feel we never really saw his highest gear. Even though he was trained to get the mile and bit further, I don’t think it would’ve taken much for the horse to switch back into his inherent bullish and undaunted ways and unleash his aggression at 5f. At full tilt, with his massive stride over a 1ft longer than that of Battaash, after many strides, Battaash would have to find extra lengths from somewhere. I envisage a similar defeat what he inflicted on Canford Cliffs by drawing the sting out of him.

Agreed Ghostie. Interesting regarding the stride length. I envisage a 2000 Guineas esque blast, with jockey not having to save anything. Zoom!
